Male gives birth to a hundred baby seahorses

A male seahorse has given birth to a hundred tiny babies at a sea life centre in Britain.

The tiny sea creatures are part of a conservation programme to rescue, breed and protect the animals.

The male 'big bellied' seahorse incubated the females eggs for 25 days before giving birth to the brood. They can carry up to a thousand eggs at one time, and are one of the only examples in the animal kingdom of males giving birth.

Male Seahorses Act Like Pregnant Mammals, Study Suggests

Pregnant male seahorses tend to develop embryos similarly to the way mammals do, new research shows. In the new study, scientists found a suite of genes that are "turned on" in the pouches of seahorses to keep the baby healthy and growing. Similar gene activity has been found in the wombs of mammals and even reptiles. As such, the finding could shed light on the evolution of live birth, called viviparity.
