More likely that he was forced out so as not to be brought into the smear campaign of the coming election. He would be a liability. Politicians rarely (if ever) leave of their own accord in this manner.

After so much practice in denying crimes of the state, I'm not surprised to see the same pattern from the individual.

They've certainly been after him long enough.  If he truly is corrupt then he must have been good at hiding evidence or intimidating witnesses. I heard one report mention that some of his accusers died before they could testify.  But in Israel even disgraced politicians can return - look at Olhmert.
