Guest Guest Posted January 19, 2001 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2001 I recently read an article in Current Science about ghosts. Well, there was a laboratory in England somewhere that was well-known as being haunted. A scientist was working on something in that laboratory and was quite scared about it's alleged haunting. Well, he was working and all of a sudden he saw a white, blurry image out of the corner of his eye. Now, I don't remember the story exactly, but I guess the scientist just shook it off and decided to take a break. He went to get his fencing sword to clean it off or something and left it in the lab to get something. When he came back, it was vibrating. Well, he found out that the fan was releasing an infra-red sound wave of a measurement 18 0r 19 of something. He remembered that he heard something about the human eye vibrating at that measurement. It turned out that everyone who had supposedly seen a ghost in the lab was just reacting to their eye vibrating. The scientist went to a "haunted" house in Coventry and found the same thing there. I am not being a sceptik about the existence of ghosts, I am only telling you what I read. This explaination does not rule out photographs though. What do you think? Magikman Posted March 22, 2001 #2 Share Posted March 22, 2001 Adam, You got it partially correct(infra-red is a color shift). There is an article in the current Fortean Times (May, 2001) associating infrasounds, low frequency sounds below the human threshold of 20hz., with reports of hauntings. Research showed that tigers emit a low frequency roar (18hz.) prior to attacking, which can induce a fearful paralysis in potential prey. Other animals are capable of long-range communication with low frequency sounds, but this was the first time that infrasound was shown to effect fear. It was found that infrasounds can cause hyperventilation, triggering nausea, fear, and anxiety in people. The human eyeball, with a resonant frequency of 18hz. also starts to vibrate, resulting in blurred vision. The combined effects might well cause a percipient to feel or see a ghostly presence. The article gives several examples of hauntings caused by an infrasound source. As soon as the source was fixed or taken away, the hauntings stopped. It might be interesting to note that infrasound has also been studied since the '50's for its potential military application. Magikman

Bogeyman Posted October 21, 2004 #4 Share Posted October 21, 2004 One question though.....how can soundwaves make you see something unless it's there ?
aquatus1 Posted October 21, 2004 #5 Share Posted October 21, 2004 The eyeballs vibrate at a frequency of 18 megahertz. When the infra-sound reaches that frequency, the eyeballs begin to shake and send signals to the brain that aren't there.
