I think the mental gymnastics here is isolating homo sapiens. Humans are of course part of the animal kingdom, we did not come from Mars. We are just as much a part of nature as any other species on earth. How can a person advocate for animal welfare and leave out hominids? You're right, it is a form of self-delusion.
