What exactly are you asking?

Why does Belial have to be asking something? Can't a person make a post simply because they find it interesting?

Sorry if it as been posted before.

Cheers, mate. I've bookmarked that for later.

While I have your ear, and hopefully Waspie's, can any of you guys recommend a good telescope for a 6yr-old who has fallen in love with moon and stars? One he could use for few years.

(not bothered about price)

I'd be hard pressed to recommend a scope to someone on that basis - why not go for something that suits *you*, but that he can still handle?

I think it's fair to say that more bad choices are made when buying a telescope than any other purchase, so my advice would be - DON'T buy a scope! Yet, I mean.. - instead, take your son to your nearest astronomy club/s so you can both try out the different types of scopes and talk to those who use them. If not, then I suggest you go to a real telescope shop and actually look at and handle the different types of scope, and listen to the owner - don't go to department stores..

Do you have good binoculars? - a good pair of 7x50's would be my starting point.. Then have a good read of this:

Remember that the very best telescope optics are absolutely useless on a shaky platform, and most telescopes you will find at department stores, even camera shops, have poor quality tripods/mounts. Avoid at all costs!

Wow thank you for posting. I watched the whole thing. The astronauts were my heros growing up and still are.

Neil is my number one hero, also. That man is the epitome of a gentleman - quite modest and quietly spoken, yet incredibly skilled and courageous - as he showed numerous times in his test piloting career and then later as an astronaut. And despite his modest dismissals, the landing of the LM was quite an achievement given that the area chosen proved to be unsuitable and he then had to manually fly a lot further than anticipated, running the LM's tanks very close to empty. But he stayed cool, and then uttered those beautifully chosen words as he eventually stepped off the footpad of the LM to be the first human to ever set foot on another world.

When you think about that, and the fact that he then has to come back here and live out his life amongst huge numbers of adoring folks like myself - and a few lunatics - you have to admire how he has handled his fame. Despite the perception of him being a recluse, he has been very generous with his time and money over the years for good causes, has in fact agreed to do several interviews, and remains to this day, friendly, modest and can even have a chuckle about the idiotic conspiracists who believe he didn't go..

Contrast that with Buzz Aldrin.. don't get me wrong, I like Buzz, but I think it's clear he resents having been number two.. Imagine if he had been the first - there'd be no shutting him up! And I think the Bart Sibrel incident might have resulted in some more serious injuries..!

Having said all that, if I was asked to just have a beer with one of them... I'd probably go for Mike Collins - he's such a likable character..

Thanks Chris.. I got him an Infinity 76P 3" Reflector Telescope. It's the one he pointed at in the shop.

(Tis for my wee great-nephew. I get new "wee nephews" every year, 'tis bankrupting me, fgs... lol)
