Talon Posted September 6, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2004 HEALTH WARNING TO MUMS A quarter of women drink alcohol and a fifth smoke during pregnancy, new figures show. One in four women drink between two and five units of alcohol a week - double the recommended weekly limit for pregnant mums. And four in 10 women take folic acid too late to protect unborn babies against the risk of conditions such as spina bifida, other researchers claimed. Smoking and drinking during pregnancy can hit mental development and cause birth defects in babies. The survey was carried out by baby charity Tommy's to mark National Pregnancy Week. The survey of 1,000 women also shows that many women do not know what foods to turn to when pregnant. Harmful foods such as swordfish and Parma ham are still being consumed. And many women still stick to the myth that they need to "eat for two". Tommy's also found that one in six mothers said they always felt unhappy or stressed during pregnancy, with one in three saying they felt unprepared for the emotional changes they experienced. http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,31500-13215732,00.html These woman don't deserve children. Kismit Posted September 7, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 7, 2004 We live in a society where people are aware of the dangers information like this is readilly available and still woman choose to make such unhealthy decisions . It's bizzare that people don't understand how much responsibilty is actually involved in raising children until it's to late .
DC09 Posted September 7, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 7, 2004 That's sad. My mom smoked lightly when she was pregnant with me but quit after I was born. Do I have any problems because of it? That's debatable, actually.
AztecInca Posted September 7, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 7, 2004 Sigh, as talon said women who smoke, drink and undertake any possibly hramful experiences to the baby should not be allowed that baby and should have a good hard look at themselves. Its common knoweldege nowadays on what you dont eat, drink, inhale when pregnant.
Guest Lottie Posted September 7, 2004 #6 Share Posted September 7, 2004 If a woman is responsible and mature enough to become pregnant than surely she is equally responsible and mature enough to make certain that she eats and drinks properly to protect her unborn child. There is no excuse to smoke and drink during a pregnancy. These days everyone is very aware of the short and long term effects that this can have on an unborn child and women who do this are nothing but SELFISH.
