How do you begin Terra-Forming another planet? There is an ancient, but educational game that hopes to answer this question though simulation called SimEarth.  I can tell you that the in the begining the secret is to crash a Comet into the planets. Many things will happen including depositing water and gasses, liberating elements and compounds stored underground, and raising the temperature. So lets crash a comet into Mars.

Unforutunately there is no remote-control for comets.

The plan would be to slingshot nukes off another planet and intercept the comet before it approached Mars and divert it into a collision path. The mission begins in [Aprox]December 1998 when the first interceptor is launched. It will carry at least two independent craft with warheads, and control systems linked through high speed communication. A secondary will be launched in January of 1999.

In September of 1999 the first interceptor will slingshot around Mars and head towards the comet. The second will follow in december dropping at least two small probes as it slingshots around. During the next few months they would adjust their heading, then deploy the independently controled warheads. Observed through a telescope and controled via radio the warheads will be detonated near the comet to change its path. The secondaries can do any final corrections after observations by the telescope.

To bad the impact will happen just after the Grand Conjuction so Mars will be in the Halo of the sun so it cannot be seen  .  


What you see, what you do not see, and what is really there is not so simple, or even the same thing. It is a begining when it is possible, practice for the future, everything happened right on time, and no one on earth would have seen it when it hit.

A solar telescope may be able to see it from Lagrange point orbit.1 2

It would be a violent event that creates many energetic reactions including a shower of high speed protons that would travel out in much the same way as in a solar flare and could be detected by an orbiting sensing satellite. 1
But since Mars will be further away it will take longer for them to arrive. 2

It'll take a looooooong time to terra-form Mars. Thousand years or so.

I could not follow the logic of this post. Are you suggesting that NASA has started to teraform Mars in 1998?

Terra-Forming Mars is very doable!

We know that Mars once had oceans,lakes
and rivers.

Also that Mars once had very active
volcanos.

All that needs to be done is come up
with a way to produce tons of greenhouse
gas in time Mars will warm and the water
will flow, the planet will come to life!

it may take thousands of years to do this
But it may be required one day as the
human population of Earth continues to
grow.

Mars could one day be very earth like!
We have the technology now to Terra-form
Mars now, just no means to get there to
do it.

The really cool part is one day if we
do choose to terra-form Mars and humans
move there the gravity is a lot less than
that here on earth, imagine basketball
on Mars!, Jordan could jump 50 feet to
do his famous dunk!

I believe in the somewhat distant future
We will terra-form Mars and thousands
of years from now anyone will have the
option to move there or vacation there.

In fact the human being on Mars could
evolve in strange ways in a few hundred thousand years!

I say forget the maned missions to Mars
for now, lets start sending machines to
Mars that can create green house gas.

Why wait... The Future is NOW!

Well, terra forming Mars sounds like a nice idea....but just promise me one thing:-

Leave the basketball behind. Future Martians will appreciate not having to watch the most boring sport ever invented by humankind.

   What?? Basketball will be the coolest sport in mars. Think about it, we probably cannot play soccer well over there, but basketball... it rulez!! Also volleyball and every other sports involving high-jump.

I think the most interesting thing about humans living on Mars is the effect the gravity, or lack of it, would have on us over time.

Our arms and legs would no longer need to be as strong, so would be thinner, but our heads would remain the same size, leaving us looking remarkably like the stereotypical image of an alien.
