US cinema to allow texting during movies

One of the largest cinema chains in the US is considering letting customers use their mobile phones during films.

AMC chief executive Adam Aron said he wanted to encourage so-called millennials to visit the cinema.

He told Variety magazine: "You can't tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That's not how they live their life."

But he said he would have to find a solution that did not disturb other movie-goers.

people use phones at the movies all the time. in nyc there is $50 fine for talking on the phone during performance, (never seen it enforced) nothing in the law about texting, or going on fb.

"Other theaters don't put up signs and don't do anything about it, which makes our job a lot harder," said Kathy Angotti, the theater's general manager. "It's a good law, and we try to enforce it. But I'm telling you, it's hard."

5]Hard, she said, because the city has provided no extra officers to issue tickets, leaving the theater's employees to try to hail an officer off the street or call 911 -- a measure that is both extreme and ineffective, because the offender is usually long gone by the time an officer arrives. Even when the police have arrived in time, she said, they have declined to issue citations.

5]A police spokesman, Detective Walter Burnes, said issuing tickets for cellphone use was not a priority for the department. The city has no record of any tickets being issued for cellphone use.

no but you can tell them to get the hell out of your theater if they don't follow the rules and disturb people who are there to actually WATCH THE MOVIE. what kind of crap is that? for two people with drinks and popcorn it's damn near a 50$ night as is now people have to be distracted by a bunch of idiots bright ass screens on their phones?

edit: im glad that where i live i can get up walk to an usher and have someone removed from the theater for being an ass.

you are gonna be a lot more destructed when police will try to remove such confrontational teen, when cops come in, lights are up, and movie stops, you will have much worst time than if he just texted on his phone, while bothering no one.

never had cops come once and have seen dozens of people kicked out, the theater by my house doesn't play that crap and i wish more people did things like the alamo did in your country. plus i can handle the movie stopping instead of missing multiple moments of the film when my eyes are drawn towards peoples cell phones and talking over the film. simple as that.

Yup pause the movie kick them out i guarantee 85% to 95% of people in attendance will support the break bring up the lights and make it know NO CELL USE IN THE Cinema pretty simple. I know i would come back after witnessing an enforcement.

last time i was in a theater 2 girls were talking the entire time and giggling on and off their phones for the first 20 minutes of the movie 1 usher came down they hurled some nasty things at him he left came back with another usher and a manager they paused the movie girls got up they started edging them out as everyone else in the theater started telling them to get the hell out among other things that rhyme with punts they were finally removed the movie started back up whole theater cheered and we all enjoyed the rest of the movie, was it annoying and a bit of a pain in the ass? sure but once again for the amount of money im paying i will not put up with that crap. plus everyone in that room got a free movie pass as we left.

never seen anyone leave peacefully, and have seen cops come in several times, stop the movie, and deal with people, thou it was not about cell phones.

i also have seen fights, ambulance come in cuz someone got knocked out pretty hard, and movie was stopped and everyone was asked to leave, than more police came to deal with people that "i paid for movie, i ain't leaving till i get my money back."

I love movies.

I hate going to the movies.

We live in a completely selfish world now. It's just common courtesy not to disrupt other movie goers, but there are so many in this society that doesn't care for common courtesy.

Both of you guys should move someplace where people have manners. I have never been in a theater where they shut down the movie while the ejected people or even seen anyone kicked out. When I went and saw Deadpool the guy next tom me had his phone vibrate and he apologized and got up to go to the lobby.

well, if i move in a place where people have manners, it wont be such place anymore, with me in it. j.k. lol, however with people we have coming to movies in area where i live, it is not unheard of, we also have metal detectors in some our movie theaters. it is mostly teens who stir sht up, adults do not act that way. for the most part at least.

also keep in mind, there are some fks who feel it is their duty to scream at anyone who has phone in their hands even if they do not bother anyone. i do not like when someone talking on the phone right next to me, but i have nothing against them texting or posting on social media, if it makes no sounds.

One of the reasons the last time ( and never will again ) I went to a theater was taking son to the original Power rangers Movie.....1995

I hate people.

Why are people so obsessed with talking/texting to others when they are in the physical company of others AND watching a movie? I will not pay to see a movie where people are texting or whatever, the lights are distracting.

Is virtual company more important than real people now? SMH

I and a pair of other teachers have had to tell patrons to shut up during a film while our classes were present.

Now, keep in mind it was a G film.

And that all the kids were in school uniform.

And it was clearly signed that our classes were going to be in cinema 4 and if anyone had a problem with that, they could get their ticket refunded or transferred to a later showing.

So the sexual innuendos being shouted at the screen by a pair of people less mature than my ten year olds was utterly unnecessary.

Revenge was sweetest though when one of my kids said they knew who one of the knuckle draggers were and that their mum worked at the school as well.

AMC Declares Texting Will Never Be Allowed In Its Theaters After Its Customers Had A Meltdown

http://www.buzzfeed....s-a#.oy3X8bv4Yd

Good for AMC!!

Now, if they could ban the selling of any candy that has a noisy wrapper. THAT is freaking annoying. People munching on popcorn is one thing, people crinkling cellophane for 10 minutes while trying to jailbreak some Junior mints sucks.

If you can't turn off your phone for watching a movie in public than you have a serious problem. Go get some help. Other customers don't have to put up with their addiction. Lights popping up here and there would not only be annoying but distracting, especially in a crowded room with enough noises and everything.

If someone doesn't have the attention span to sit through a movie for a couple of hours without finding out who just farted on Facebook, they're not going to have the mental capacity to follow the plot of a movie... even if it's "Alvin and the Chipmunks."

Better to just bar them altogether to avoid psychological trauma

I cannot understand how anyone can honestly believe being away from a phone for 2 hours is hard to do. If they would rather sit in the bathroom stall texting than watching the movie with their friends, go ahead and let them. Don't annoy the rest of your customers over it though.

Not sure why you think this. It really bothers most people. The light itself is the worst part. Like a beacon that your eyes are drawn to.

It really isn't too much to ask that people go the 2 hours without their phone on. The peer pressure is usually enough to get everyone to keep their phones off.

I've never been to a movie where it was stopped because of the cops.

I rarely go to the movies but when I do it's usually a movie that would have cinematic value to me. Something that is just better on the big screen like the 'Star Wars' series movies. Sure you can get a close feeling with a big screen TV and surround sound at home but experiencing the feeling of suspense and action knowing that everyone around you is sharing the same feelings just makes the experience that much better.

When you pay for a movie ticket you are paying for the experience of the movie, not any annoying disturbances that go along with it. Never in a million years would I think of pulling out my phone during a movie.

you could always take your eyes off someones phone and watch the movie, i for some reason never bothered by people texting, as long as their sound does not go off every time.

It's not really me looking at their phone, it's the light from the phone that is disturbing to people.

I'd compare it to driving at night with the overhead light on. It just gets to you.
