5 injured after firearms go off at Ohio, N.C., Indiana gun shows

(CNN) -- At least five people -- three in North Carolina, one in Indiana and one in Ohio -- were injured after weapons went off at gun shows Saturday, officials said, at a time when there's been renewed discussion about private gun sales at such shows.

The most casualties came at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, where attendees bolted -- with at least one woman wiping out in the frenetic scene -- when gunfire rang out around 1 p.m., as seen on video captured by CNN affiliate WRAL.

Some people shouldn't be handling weapons. I'd like to see fire arms safety and handling courses offered in schools nation wide - voluntary of course. The incident with the loaded shotgun discharging happened in just the location it was meant to happen - outside the display floor. Every show I've been to has a safety check upon entering and if an individual is looking to find a buyer or get an appraisal they have to have a safety device on the weapon before entering. Accidents happen. I remember a cop in Mobile, AL that shot himself in the left buttock with his service weapon while getting into his cruiser. I think they nicknamed him "lefty" after that :w00t:

Alotta spin. Was one gun show when it first aired. I wonder if it was a paid anti gun freak that did this one. This thread should be probably be moved to CT section.

What i want to know is, why did they have loaded weapons in the exhibition hall? What kind of ramshackle organisation was that?

I'm afraid this one, though And in Indianapolis, a man walking out of the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show shot himself in the hand as he was loading his .45-caliber semi-automatic firearm, Indiana State Police said in a statement is really a candidate for a Darwin Award, isn't it. Perhaps that's the sort of threshold where one should not be permitted to have a Gun.

Just shows the brilliance of some gun owners and the control they have over their weapons.

This is one of those times Im gonna ask for more information about there firearm backgrounds before I exclude them as nothing but agitator plants to push the anti gun agenda....1 accident ok. I can get that. But this story was way too much and too obvious IMO.

Im referring to specifically who these people were how many arms they own. How many shows they have been too. What they have sold at a show before or bought. Do they have any firearm training. Gun shows in general are not for amateur gun users. Unless your there for the loopholes. So are these people in these incidents patsies ....

shootings at gun shows seem not to be singular incidents:

These incidents go as far back as 2008, now, 5 shot on the same day is a new record.

I feel this info is totally irrelevant because nothing you were asking about is needed to buy a gun. When idiots handle guns, people get hurt and we have nothing to stop idiots from getting a gun...

Hmm... 2008? If there are no instances before that I can't help but lean towards a little conspiratorial.

If I dig a little I am pretty sure to find incidents all the way back to the 90s. That was just superficial and on the first page of an Ixquick search.

Was wondering this too, considering a security guard guarding a school has a gun which is NOT loaded, then why have these loaded at an exhibition?

My theory about the incident at the security check is that the owner did not know the thing was loaded... which is how most gun accidents happen.

People harp on the gun control side for facts and statistics, and then just dismiss everything that doesn't suit you as some sort of conspiracy.

the owners must have known their guns were loaded?

On another note:

"Sheriff Donnie Harrison said he was unsure whether it was legal to bring a loaded gun on state fairgrounds. However, when the state fair is held in October, it is illegal to bring a loaded gun to the fairground because of the large crowds, authorities said."

The Sheriff is unsure? how the heck are the people going to know then?

Which shows complacency towards gun safety, I say.

Well, if you stick a gun anywhere near you not knowing whether it is loaded or not and you do not check it before doing that you should question you competence in gun handling. Yes, whoever has his hands on his gun should know whether it is loaded.

Should be, like i said, a basic rule to determine who shouldn't have a Gun.

As should knowing not to point it at any part of you, or anybody else, when you're loading or unloading it.

Darwin Awards as applied to gun ownership.

Absolutely, sad thing is, I would imagine that all those at the exhibition with guns, were licensed to have them.

Accidents shouldn't have a place in this debate, honestly, even highly trained individuals who are regularly around guns even make mistakes. It is human nature... to use human nature to justify changing the constitution is nothing but a shady move. If Obama's admin and congresses try to capitalize on this, I will lose any respect I have left for them. Of course I was taught to check and double check to see if a bullet is chambered, that means ejecting the shells out multiple times until I am absolutely sure. Then I will proceed to look into the chamber and count my bullets to make sure I have the exact number. I hold gun safety in high regards.

But your high regards for gun safety is not held by all, thats the point, some have licenses and should not. These accidents would never had happen if those who owned them had shown the same respect as yourself.
