inadvertently causes something to happen? I mean there is a mass number of people world wide that are all expecting some kind of grandiose event. Imagine the shock and outrage if.. nothing happens. We live now in a sort of post-organic landscape, media has evolved(or mutated) to such a degree that it encompasses a large portion of our daily lives. Ads are unavoidable, Hollywood hype is inescapable and the internet has created a vehicle for the average man to share his/her own music,video, opinion, images etc. This is our new reality, an interconnected cybernetic apparatus to which all humans are being linked to. Fewer and fewer of us are independent of technology. Technology is becoming a societal unconscious, an operating system to which we are all confined to. This change came very rapid, and seemingly without warning. One can't help but wonder the affect this will have on individual perception. In this day and age, no matter what anyone likes to think,  science is worshiped. The word of science is practically law. Many of us desperately cling to our old dogma which is hailed as intensely ignorant, but at the end of the day, modern science gets the last word. According to Carl Jung, spirituality is an imperative part of human conscience. People need something to believe in, something more romantic and whimsical than cold, heartless image of modern science. From the past emerges a savior, an old "prophecy" which seems to suggest a time of great change at winter solstice, 2012. The people sitting in their homes in the familiar glow of their monitors are the first to know. The internet spreads 2012 speculations like a virus, it's absorbed into our "entertainment" minds, the section of the mind which is all to familiar with far-out ideas. A certain breed is the first to gravitate to this kind of thing, the hungry. These "hungry" people are precariously waiting for something to happen, watching the skies and reading between the lines. These are archetypal "shamen" ,watchers of the natural order all of its subtle activities. The order the shamen watch is no longer in the beasts and in the stars. It is in the papers, the t.v shows etc. This is the new world and they are paying close attention, looking for the signs, so to speak. The wisemen have spoke of 2012 as a time of great change and the populace, whom are ever looking for an escape from the incomprehensible machine(interestingly enough, most schizophrenics think their adversary is mechanical in nature. I think these people may have a natural tendency to "internalize". but that's another topic all together) which they find, cold desolate and de-humanizing. What we are left with is mass anticipation, and if it does not come into fruition, possibly devastation. Think about it. Think about all the "nuts" who have a dependency on the outcome of this date. They're sick of it all, the post-organic landscape, the forty hour work weeks, the stale and repetitive nature of their unfulfilled lives, the whole boatload of intolerable Bull****. They want to be elevated by a golden chorus into a whole new level of existence. Purged of all the things stagnant and obtuse in this foul corner of human existence. They'll be waiting, dressed in outrageous robes, screaming for the coming of the aliens from the rooftops, waiting for fourth dimensional perception to descend upon them. And if nothing comes? Riots, outrage, hysteria, suicide. People will be confronted by the horrid fact that their meager ego-based existence is meaningless. Do you think they'll be happy? no. Hell no. These "peace lovers" will have an appetite for destruction. And this is almost assuming that mass civil unrest doesn't occur to the moments leading up to that faithful day. Imagine that? People panicking before a doomsday prediction, who knew? If the world around is going mad with looting and decadence while waiting for the hour of judgment and nothing of significance occurs, would you not join the madness? Is this the time of change the Mayans spoke of? A time that will force us to re-evaluate what we are and what this is going on around us? It would be deliciously ironic if the Mayans prediction came true, in a way, simply because we believed it to be true. So in a weird way, of nothing of esoteric significance occurs, there may still be a massive change, although one at the price of our basic dignity. This is what we get for repressing our basic instincts, indulging in excessive materialism and forgetting the sound of our heart beat.  December 21st, 2012. The day the house of cards comes crumbling down. god help us. Anyone think this speculation has any significance? Or is it crap?

Interesting topic. I believe that there is something to the 2012 prophecy. I mean it is not like the 2000 hoax which was obviously faked. This date has been talked about by many cultures of people and they all seem to say that a big change will take place. When you have all these different ancient cultures saying that this date will be significant it makes you think twice. Now of course people will not no until that date comes but you have to admit that there seems to be something to it. I doubt all these cultures predicted the same date coincidentally i believe that there is something that will happen on this date. But like i said you wont know until that date comes so well have to wait to see what happens.

these are different how? a couple of guys ending a calender means nothing to me. its a celebration of the winter solistice. that damn nibiru hoax is just that too, a hoax. magnetic pole shifts take thousands of years.

The Mayans were the ancient culture that had a calendar that ends its 5th and final stage on December 21 2012 but many other cultures say that in 2012 a big chang will take place. These cultures didnt create that calendar but they had many prophecies for this date.

Name the cultures please and explain how they refer to 2012. Because as far as I know, no other culture does and as far as the mayans are concerned, their calendar cycle ends, no more no less.

I dare say the overwhelming response to 'nothing happening' would be a quiet and dejected slink back into their homes and normal lives. There have been multiple 'end of the world' type scenarios in just my lifetime and, while the 2012 one might be a lot bigger, I really can't see the believers rioting because nothing happened.

Name the cultures. as well the calender ends here because its the end of the great cycle, which is a very big celebration for the mayans.

The cultures are the aztecs , the natives, the egyptians, the mayans and others. Try searching for these yourself and you will see what i mean. Just put ancient cultures 2012 predictions into the search box.

Did anyone every consider that the reason the Mayan calender doesn't go beyond that date because it didn't need to?  I mean maybe they were going to use that calender up before carving a new one.  It's just that there aren't many Mayans around now to do it.  

I have a calender on my desk here at work that ends on December 31, 2009! Maybe the end of the world, maybe time to hit the Hallmark store for a new one.

Also the Mayan calender was cyclical, the universe moves on a 29,000+ year cycle and Dec 5 2012 is when it reaches the start point again, so just start at the start of the calender again and you will have 29,000 or more years till the next end of the world.

Something will happen in 2012, but it will have nothing to do with any "predictions". Something happens everyday. A day where nothing happens is a day when our existence is no more.

The Mayans did not predict anything at all, the present cycle of their calandar ends in 2012, no more no less. As I've mentionned in another thread, the Popol Vuh is a memory aid for astronomical and mathematical data, and was used by the mayan priesthood. Not to be taken literally.

The Egyptians, never made any prediction about 2012. I will ask our two resident Egypt specialists to answer you on this one. Hell, one of them nearly knows every utterance by heart.

The Natives you refer to are the native americans I suppose? They predict a change in the way we look at things, a spiritual change, if you will. Not the end of the world at all.

The aztecs, I admit, I am not very familiar with, so I have noting to say here.

And others? What others? Google it myself? I think not!

This is how it works, you claim something, then it is up to you to provide the evidence to back up your claim. You do not tell me to go google for it!

The vagueness of your answer, makes me reach the conclusion, that in fact you have no proof at all.

If you're reffering to the Y2K "hoax" this did in fact take place, just that people took action to prevent it from becoming a big deal.

If nothing happens on 2012 either, nothing happens and life moves on, OR... People start rioting and we kill eachother and this becomes the 2012 prophecy, which then leads to something happening which defeats the "nothing happens" part.

To everyone who said that i have no proof, uh i simply told you facts from ancient cultures and i was even nice enough to tell you where to find it. I have given you evidence it just appears you are blind to see it. I told you to search for that on the internet so that you could read it yourself firsthand. I really dont see what the problem is.

I believe that this whole 2012 thing is a load of crap on one level: it's all media-driven. I believe that something will happen, but not catastrophic like some think. I think that an alien visitation/contact could happen. The Apocalypse is too early. Interesting idea, but nothing bad. Maybe animals will start speaking human language. Now that would be awesome!
