The re-examination of a sparrow-sized fossil from China challenges the commonly held belief that birds evolved from ground-dwelling theropod dinosaurs that gained the ability to fly. It it always seemed obvious to me that adaptive radiation after the Permian extinction led to two different branchs of archosaurs, one originating and staying arboreal gliders, the other coming to ground and evolving into the theropod lineages we are familiar with today. It just seems much easier to explain the bird-like features of theropods, and their curious loss of two fingers, that way, than the other way around. It also explains feathers on non flying theropods and the ability of some species to re-evolve to tree dwelling bird-like dinosaurs.
