It's not a stupid question .

Linux is an operating system , just like windows is an operating system it's all the bits and pieces we use to run our computers in a user friendly way . Linux was designed by a group of programmers who wanted to offer everyone an alternative to Windows at a cheaper cost and can be downloaded free of charge or purchased through a retailer this way you get technical advice as well . Only real trouble that I know of is that Linux is huge , it comes on 3 seperate discs if you want to install the shop brought variety .

Way to much for my little computer . original.gif

Depends on what version Linux you want.

I use Linux for work, I hate using winbloze. I switch only when I have too.

Wish I could persuade everyone to avoid the zombie-spam mess people call windows.

only 1 disk is needed normally for installing

there are also versions that run from a cd with out installing it

btw Linus is based on Unix..... The problem with linux is it support for games and other programs

I like to use both Linux and Windows, both are pretty good Linux is more for experienced users.

Wish I could persuade everyone to avoid the zombie-spam mess people call windows.

there we go again.. A real Linux user flaming Windows

Not flaming at all. I use Windows just as much as Linux. However, Linux has its ups as well as downs. Same as any OS. I don't do much gaming anyway. So, gaming is really a moot point for me.

I've always used windows and have had very few problems with it. For the more experienced computer users a little configuration and some common sense and most conflicts and bugs can be avoided.

As for linux, I downloaded it, installed it, ran it and then got rid of it. whistling2.gif

If you don't know what Linux is, or how the big the download is going to be. You shouldn't be using it anyway.

Not trying to be rude, but its not quite as user friendly as windows is. It would most likely be an ISO or some other kind of CD-image file. Since its going to be on a couple CD's. I would guess around 400-500 megs depending. Look at the Linux site. They have FTP addresses up for downloading it.

I reccomend if you want to tool about with it. Put in another hard-drive as a slave.

Doesn't have to be a big hard-drive.

Actually linux is much smaller that windows. what u need to do is download 3ISO's. and ISO is a dick image and is used to burn to a disk. then u put in the first disk and restart ur computer.. and is should start the install process...it is only like 500mb to install...u use the fedora core linux and it has everything you need.. only problem with linux is that it can't run most windows programs. and also is not very good for playing games, again, because of the lack of software that works on linux. it is totally free but requires a fair ammount of computer knoledge to get working, unless you want to pay someone else to install it for you.

I also wouldent recomend using it unless you are an experienced user and really have a need for it
