Still Waters Posted January 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2014 An hour before the Grimsvotn volcano erupted, a Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument perched on its flanks showed the ground shifting noticeably. Those data, streamed in real time back to volcanologists, revealed not only that the eruption was imminent, but also its likely size. http://www.nature.co...ey-spew-1.14498
Sir Wearer of Hats Posted January 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 13, 2014 An hour's not a lot of warning time if you're not expecting an eruption, but it'd be enough to do a a quick "save your life" evacuation (people in the way of bushfires get less then an hour's warning to bug out, but they normally know there's a bushfire on the way so have everything they want saved packed and ready to go) if it's a really nasty eruption. Keel M. Posted January 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 21, 2014 I always thought there was an earth quake of some sort before an eruption.
