There seems to be no explanation of what was interesting before this happened, and the object is clearly quite insignificant until the 'explosion'. Why does the smoke stay so still? - after initially blooming out, the smoke seems to retain its position and shape exactly relative to the clouds, even though the clouds appear to be moving (look at how they pass by the overhead wire) - given the way winds work, it seems unlikely that the smoke would not move relative to the clouds (or vice versa) if it was at a lower altitude, and there are several clues that suggest it is much closer to the camera than the clouds... (eg the strong contrast - little or no haze appears to be affecting the 'things'). Can't be 100% sure, but my spider senses are tingling..
