perhaps i'm just not influenced by marketing ploys or perhaps it's because i attach very little importance to monetary things in my life, who knows?

I tend to be the same way, but the overwhelming majority of people are not. Quite frankly though, the point isn't in regards to you or me specifically. It's simply saying subliminal messaging is a tactic used by advertising agencies, and that sex and money are often the imagery they use to accomplish this.

i think there is more sinister crap going on with the wording in ads than the visuals.

my opinion is that the large majority of people are sheep where marketing is concerned, and they pretty much are roped in one way or the other.

I tend to agree.

i am very sensitive to it in my conscious thought so i figure i probably have a good filter in my subconscious thought as well.

That may be true to a certain extent if money does not appeal to you in any sort of way. Sexual imagery on the other hand is something that appeals to the vast majority of people (as well as money).

if people bothered to educate themselves as consumers these ploys wouldn't even be an issue.

That's only true to a certain extent. In regards to the slogans and colorations and things of that nature I tend to agree with you. As for the subliminal messaging tactics, however, they are called subliminal for a reason. That reason is to infiltrate and manipulate ones thoughts in a way they will not be aware of.

And if you take a look at the responses by a lot of people in this thread who think it is a waste of time or the dumbest thing ever, well, that kind of gives you an overview as to how much most people care to educate themselves as comsumers about such ploys, doesn't it.

no i'm more of the sarcastic type. there are all kinds of people in the world, some of us aren't as nice as you'd like. welcome to the internet.

I'm well aware of these things. It doesn't excuse the behavior, however. And as for this site, or any other for that matter, it only takes away from it rather than be beneficial in any kind of way.

oh incidentally, i did not ridicule unit.

Whether you did or didn't, I don't believe I stated that you specifically had done so.

true enough.
my belief is that education/knowledge is power. to educate the conscious mind to think critically inevitably will discipline the subconscious ad well. do i have proof of this? you bet i do not lol but i feel that is the case at least with me. once i became aware i soon could not help but be inundated with it everywhere i went. that's got to sink in deeper.

Are you rotten and defensive towards everyone that doesn't fall in line with what you think and say?

I haven't said anything that implies unit can't handle himself. He's a member of this community and no one should be getting ridiculed within it - especially when it's just one person piling on top of another. It's shameful.

Whether it was being done to unit or any other member at random here I would've replied in the same manner.

People really should learn how to treat others with kindness and respect whether they agree with someone or not.

I don't think anyone is ridiculing him ....... having fun with the subject matter, yes. Be honest, he did rather set himself up by making such a big, secretive deal about it! He himself admits to 'yanking our chains'.

there is no excuse for bad behavior, i heartily agree. however i do not make excuses for mine. i do tend toward sarcasm from time to time but i sort of chuckled when i read your comment about my being rotten and defensive.  i think you'll find that i'm not in the habit of being difficult here, i can even be smart and engaging *grinz
the point i am making with regard to personalities on the internet is that we are all different. some of us are soft and gentle and some are abrupt and some are jerks and some are brainiacs etc

So when you said: 'He's a member of this community and no one should be getting ridiculed within it ....... especially one(?) it's just one person piling on top of another', you were specifically leaving out JGirl were you?

You and I tend to think the same way in this regard then.

The only thing is, I tend to think that regardless of how much I realize about how purposefully everything associated with marketing and advertising really is (and I am very aware of all the "tricks" they use) the subliminal messaging is something that I believe still has an effect on all of us regardless of how well educated we may be about such things.

If it is pointed out to us then it loses it's effect. But otherwise, it will have some sort of influence over people.

In some cases it could backfire. Like if someone has had bad sexual experiences in their life (having been abused or  molestested, etc) then their thoughts of sex may be very negative ones.

If that is the case than having a sexual subliminal message planted into their subconscious may result in that person associating negative thoughts with it. It may make the feel uneasy and anxious, or depressed, (etc) and therefore they may find themselves avoiding the product (or store, etc) and not understanding how something like a store could be givng them negative feelings for no obvious reasons.

I think this thread has more than run its course, right now all we're seeing is a lot of bickering.

Subliminal advertising is a worthy topic for discussion - finding pornographic imagery in a photograph of some vegetables is not.
