Still Waters Posted October 31, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 31, 2008 Bird watchers from across the country descended on a rural canal today to catch a glimpse of a breed of heron spotted in the UK for only the third time since records began. The green heron, a native of North and Central America, was first seen by the Royal Military Canal in West Hythe, Kent, a few days ago The bird has not been spotted in the UK since 2005 when one was seen in Anglesey, North Wales. Prior to that it had only been spotted in 2001 when another made a brief trip to Lincolnshire. RSPB spokesman Grahame Madge said: 'It is something a lot of bird watchers will be very keen to see. Although it is not a first for Britain, there have been a couple of other sightings, it is something very sought after. 'It is a highly prized bird in the eyes of many bird watchers. If it does stick around for the weekend, I anticipate a lot of people will travel to see it.' Link/Pics
