Update -

But a few intriguing clues suggest poisonous algae that form so-called red tides may be intoxicating the Humboldt squid and causing the disoriented animals to swim ashore in Monterey Bay,

Reminds me of Biblical Prophecy:  "And the second angel poured out his bowl upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man; and every living thing died in the sea."
