I have a novel opinion about the bigfoot - UFO thing. In my "opinion" I believe these things are manifested by (to quote John Keel) "a cosmic joker". That is to say they aren't really real and this joker just likes to F... with us, I mean this is the 21st century with all the gadgets we have and thousands of people looking for these things all we get is fuzzy pics? Come on. My suggestion is to totally ignore these things, stop looking, stop reporting anything and one of two things will happen. Either this joker will get tired of screwing with us or it will get so pissed off it will mess up and reveal itself. My point is what happens when someone messes with you? You do one of 3 things, you ignore them, get back at them or you beat the s....t out of them. Since we can't get back or beat the s...t out of it just ignore it. I think it would be an interesting experiment but that would mean getting everybody on the planet to do this which ain't gonna happen. Just a thought.

This is more irrational than bigfoot eating their dead. I guess we could ignore everything we can't resolve.

Not everything ignored goes away or reveals itself.  I think it would be a mistake to stop looking for things that aren't suppose to exist.  That's how new species are found.

This is an interesting theory I've never heard of before. I'm just curious, what made you believe in this theory? Personal experience? Read about it? Friend told you?

If you mean "cosmic joker" to be the collectivity of humanity then I agree with you.

John Keel, famous for his Mothman Prophecies fiction-sold-as-fact book, has proposed this theory several times. In this book the unknown forces which are creating Mothman, flying saucers, Men in Black, strange animals, crank calls, and other unexplained phenomena seem to be aware of him investigating them. When Keel loses interest in one of them, the force creates a new one, often sillier than the last as if they were taunting him. I think his book "Disneyland of the Gods" ended with something like "If there is a God, must He be sane?" or something similarly ominous.

I can't take anything the man said seriously because his books are full of made up stories stated as fact and scientific falsehoods that anyone can look up and disprove.

  • We're all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories. There isn't a stronger connection between people than storytelling.

Perhaps you are taking the "Cosmic Joker" concept too literally. Trickster figures, like Coyote shown above, have always had important roles to play within various cultures but today those roles are now largely forgotten, downplayed, misrepresented, or poorly understood. Perhaps, then, the "Cosmic Joker" is not some external entity messing with us but an archetype which manifests through us as individuals, groups, and even entire societies.

As with many paranormal subjects there is a very significant trickster element (eg hoaxes and fakery) which, instead of detracting from the phenomena, may actually play an important role in inducing the desired paranormal experience. Shamanism.

Hansen believes that paranormal events, such as sightings of strange beasts, UFOs and ghosts, are sighted when the society is in disorder, and least when society is ordered, but also during times of transition (for example, from youth to adulthood). He argues that there is a connection between all the different aspects of "the unknown", as well as with parapsychology.

I just thought about it logically, I mean let's treat this in the most basic form. Why would anyone..anything want to do this? If there are other inhabitable planets with life as evolved as ours going on there also? If so then our perception of god must be an insane being or beings by our perception. Maybe it's a test to see our reaction like lab rats or maybe this being or beings just like to f... with other civiations (sic) just because they can.
