Minds_Eye Posted November 15, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Why is it that some college quarterbacks like Russell Wilson and RGIII can show immediate effectiveness at the NFL level while others like the once highly touted Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen are unable to live up to pro expectations? Out of all the Heisman winning and/or top round drafted quarterbacks, relatively few seem to deliver the goods once in the NFL...
Skep B Posted November 15, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Theres a big talent jump between college and the NFL, and the same could be said for most positions. QBs jsut tend to get a lot more attention for obvious reasons. Natural athleticism and the right offensive scheme is a big factor. I still think Tebow didn't get a fair shake, but that's an unpopular opinion.
Taun Posted November 15, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Often it's a combination of a change of receivers, O Line, coaching and the speed of the game... The NFL is a much faster game (ie shorter reaction time and less time to make reads) Some College QB's make their gaudy numbers against lesser quality teams as well... Minds_Eye Posted November 15, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted November 15, 2014 So wouldn't it be more advantageous then for the college coaches to adapt a style similar to the NFL's?
Skep B Posted November 15, 2014 #5 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Not for the coaches. College systems are smaller and easier to learn. The coaches are concerned with winning, not trying to make NFL players. they want to make sure their programs is effective first and foremost. Bama13 Posted November 17, 2014 #6 Share Posted November 17, 2014 Many college QBs are "system" QBs, they tend not to do well in the NFL "system". In college two yards is wide open, in the pros two feet is wide open. Tebow, in the only year he was a starter, took his team to the playoffs and won a playoff game. Minds_Eye Posted November 18, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted November 18, 2014 But college players get paid millions of dollars after being drafted to the pros... I guess they just get re-trained by new people and are expected to adjust to the changes? Anyone know the percentage of successful NFL rookies vs the expensive busts? Skep B Posted November 18, 2014 #8 Share Posted November 18, 2014 Here's a study from around 2010 that seems pretty comprehensive. http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftquarterbackriskmyth.php
Minds_Eye Posted November 19, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted November 19, 2014 Thanks for the link, Zod! Matt Stafford seems to be improving, but I still think Mark "Mr Butt-Fumble" Sanchez sucks. I can see Russell Wilson continuing to do well as the franchise quarterback for the Seahawks, but what's up with RGIII's disappointing play post-knee injury?
