U.S. to offer $100 mln in aid to Somalia

WASHINGTON, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The United States is trying to provide Somalia with up to 100 million U.S. dollars in aid, according to a statement released by the State Department on Saturday.

The U.S. government was "moving forward" with a 40-million-dollar aid package for Somalia and had asked Congress to provide a further 60 million dollars, the statement said.

"This assistance will be used to support development and security needs, to assist in the deployment of the African Union Mission in Somalia stabilization force, and to provide humanitarian assistance."

How dare us!

-------------------------------------

100 million dollars there should make some progress (as a start). Unfortunately, the kids we save seem to just grow up hating the west anyways...

I wonder who else is gonna pony up some much needed cash?

I think this is a waste of tax payer money. I'm sick of the U.S. as being the worlds welfare!!! and people wonder why we are in such a deficite.

Personally I think every country has a duty to look after their own first.

Well I think most countries in the West give out a lot of aid, don't they? I do think that our governments should look after us first and foremost, but they should give aid if they can.

We are in a deficit because of Bush's Corporate Welfare and Bush's War. The old myth that Republicans are fiscally responsible has been flushed down the drain. :tu:

WOW I didn't know he did all this without congress. as to Republicans are fiscally more responsable is true as of lately, though we did get attacked on 9/11 and the security of the nation should always be a priority. I think the government should mostly focus money on is our military and giving our solders the very best.

Pretty much a waste. In a short while they'll find something else to fight about.

If anything, should put that 100 million dollars to a 3rd season of Rome. Least then some good will come of the money.

Concidering that an Islamist jihadist movement was kicked out of the major cities of Somalia at the end of last year. And tried to make a comeback last week. I think it is important not to allow another Afganistan to develop in Africa. If the Union of Islamic Courts do make a comeback, with the help of Islamist veterns of the Afgan War, it could cost a lot more than $100 million to solve the problem in the future.

Pinky, of course it's noble but do you ask yourself why "they" would "hate you anyway"?

Giving money is fine, but as long as you support one of the factions (in this case, the opposition), one has to count with raised voices from the other, even among the civilian populace.

Nice, but considering that we will have to do this alone, (You don't actually think that we will get help do you?) the UN will fight us the whole way-either clandestinely or through what little media there is there, and since we will be doing this on our own, we will also be accused of 'imperialism'. (Like there's something actually there we would want).

We need to pressure the UN to join us (my money says they won't)..And then, use this opportunity to expose the UN as the worthless, self-serving, 'detrimental to the world' entity that it really is..

Time for "WE the people" to kick out all of the garbage out of DC. Both parties are devoid of common sense. Hell, I need a new Harley and have to wait because I owe taxes. It is a shame. George Patton where are you?

Wasn't it Somalia where they shot down the US Blackhawk helicopters (as in the film/book "black hawk down"), and paraded mutilated US soldiers through the streets ? Of am I getting muddled up with another AFrican country ? They all tend to blur together after a while. Same anti-western shouts, same Kalashnikovs firing into the air.

Well, I'm sorry to sound heartless, but at the end of the day Somalia is a LONG way away from the UK, and I don't have ANY friends there. Nor does the UK have (I belive) any direct national interests. So I'd rather WE didn't spend any money there, thank you very much. Perhaps the US may want to consider a similar policy ? After all, surely Congress is supposed to look after it's own citizens, not those from a hostile country 2000+ miles away.

I rather liked what the US did with Yemen. (I THINK it was Yemen, anyway... one of those countries). There was a vote in the UN that effected US interests. The US tried to persuade Yemen (amongst others) to vote with the US. Yemen refused (rather rudly, as I recall). So the US cut off all American foreign aid to them. Woohoo ! :D

Lots of people criticised this move, but it was a fair point. "Why should we give money to you, if you don't help us in return ? "

I miss Twin Peaks..a spellbindingly weird, addictive story if there ever was one. The only show that could compare was "Northern Exposure". It would have been nice if HBO would have picked it up either one..

"Damn fine cup of coffee".
