Anyone use SETI @ Home?

Hey,

I just started participating in the whole SETI @ home thing. Just wondering what some of your thoughts are about it? A waste of power/time/etc?

I am almost wondering if somehow people are pooling resources and just mining bitcoins or something with my help.

I figured since I have a decent gaming machine, I could have it help mapping the galaxy and such while I'm not gaming.

I'd like to hear some thoughts on what you think about not just the project but the good and the bad as far as wear and tear on a PC and such, anything really.

Thanks.

I used to belong to SETI at home several years ago. I think it's a good, legitimate program, I don't think it's a waste of time if you consider SETI a viable attempt at discovering intelligent life out there. I stopped when they changed their interface to something I didn't like. Also, my old computer wasn't strong enough to cope with it if I remember correctly.

I may go back and look into it again, although my computer I'm using now is not a new one, either. I think if you leave your computer on when you're not using it or when sleeping you should have no problems.

There's also Planet Hunters, if you can figure out what's going on.

I've been with SETI @ Home for seven years. One never knows when we may turn up a real ET signal. Given that possibility, I think it's well worth participating.

Persistence may well pay off. So far we've looked in only a tiny fraction of the possible combinations of sky direction, signal sensitivity level, and radio frequencies. Like a glass of water dipped out of the ocean!

Cool, thanks for the info.

Yeah, so far Ive chosen to help with:

SETI = Search for extraterrestrial intelligence

Find = Malaria research

Milky Way = astroinformatics and computer science.

NFS = Sieve factorization

Rosetta = HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer's research
