As the nation marks Remembrance Sunday, we reveal the untold story of the birdwatching PoWs who enriched the lives of fellow prisoners – and played a key role in one of the war’s most daring escapes.

Nearly 200,000 Allied servicemen endured up to five years as POWs during the Second World War, but few tales of captivity are as bizarre and, in many ways, truly uplifting as those of the British birdwatchers. As Squadron Leader John Barrett, another dedicated ornithologist, wrote in his diaries, birds “occupied hundreds and hundreds of hours during which, in spirit, I was not confined”.

Just shows you that you can escape anything at least for a while in your mind.

Must of been horrible to be a POW.
