Karasu Posted October 31, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, and just north east of the Ngorongoro Crater, in the eastern branch of Africa's immense Great Rift Valley. Nestled between rolling volcanic hills and deep craters, Lake Natron sits at the lowest point of the rift valley - 600m above sea level - and is probably the world's most caustic body of water. Karasu Posted October 31, 2014 Author #2 Share Posted October 31, 2014 I had a chance to see this last year. It's amazing. If you decide to go, take plenty of bottled water. Also, take a hat with a neck visor. Sunscreen is also advised. The heat and sun can be brutal.

I feel bad for the animals, but I'll admit I find it neat on a demented level. Nature truly is anmazing. Edited October 31, 2014 by Karasu

They go for a bath, sits down to dry off, and turns into pillars of salt literally. The insane thing is that it must happen so fast because the birds seem so relaxed in their posture, like they didn't have the time to feel it coming on. Otherwise one would think they would be frozen in postures of pain and frantic positions of desperate escape from their fate. You dont see a bird caught dead in an oil-spill in these poses, for example. They should call it Lot's Wife Lake instead. The narrative of Lot's wife begins in Genesis 19 after two angels arrived in Sodom As dawn was breaking, Lot's visiting angels urged him to get his family and flee, so as to avoid being caught in the impending disaster for the iniquity of the city. The command was given, "Flee for your life! Do not look behind you" Traveling behind her husband, Lot's wife looked back, and was turned into a pillar of salt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lot%27s_wife#Genesis_narrative
Sir Smoke aLot Posted November 1, 2014 #6 Share Posted November 1, 2014 This is fascinating, wonderful but kinda sad too, seeing all those animals turned into salty statues. Animals do look relaxed indeed @EllJay. That is weird.
