In health bill, Obama attacks wealth inequality

Gap between economic well-being of the sick, healthy has been growing

For all the political and economic uncertainties about health reform, at least one thing seems clear: The bill that President Obama signed on Tuesday is the federal government’s biggest attack on economic inequality since inequality began rising more than three decades ago.

Over most of that period, government policy and market forces have been moving in the same direction, both increasing inequality. The pretax incomes of the wealthy have soared since the late 1970s, while their tax rates have fallen more than rates for the middle class and poor.

Economic equality hu? Translation- Im turning our free republic into a socialist nation.

Im considered lower middle class in my area. Borderline with the poor. The poor folks around me have far better health care through medicaid then myself any my family. Not only do I pay for them already, now I will be hit with a vast amount of direct and indirect taxes on top of it. Where the hell is my equality?

Government providing entitlements to the public for their well being is socialism.

Government assuring wealth equality is pure communism.

I think the goal is to return things to the balance that existed under Reagan.

Of course they will. That's how it's always been. The poor always pay more.

Our friends on the otherside of the Atlantic are going from living the American dream to living the American lie with the lie being all people are equals.

When a state starts penalising its most successful citizens they move their business abroad in a brain-drain. Goodbye America the lights are going out for you.

Read what you've written.

When the poor find it harder to buy your product because its more expensive you sell less so it does hurt the rich. Bye bye America hello China.

They already have moved their businesses, or the jobs, to other countries. Maybe they should move to those other countries where they've moved their businesses. Let the smaller businesses build. I bet we'd be better off without these huge businesses that we can't let fail. The mindset of these big businesses has already trickled down into the mainstream. Success is now defined as who can steal the most.

No, these days it's foreign markets. The American rich don't deal with the American poor much. They don't have enough cash to be of interest and they won't work for $1/hour.

the local walmart employs what up to a hundred people. there are three walmarts in this area. so that is what 300 people. this doesnt count the suppliers or the truckers. a small business employs on average what 5 to 10 people do you think that there is enough business for the 10 to 52 stores that would be needed to hire all of those people.

also if the big businesses move out of country then who's going to pay for the new health care.

I agree with you that Walmart's not one of the problems. Walmart provides decent insurance coverage already and probably won't be much affected by this.

Well, these people prate on and on about how they love the troops who are risking their lives for "our freedoms". Then when it comes their turn to sacrifice for their country (some tax money... an tiny sacrifice relative to our troops) they get all huffy and belligerent.

Then they have the gall to point out the sacrifice of the troops... "over in Iraq people are fighting for my American freedoms...". As if the fact that others are sacrificing there lives means that they shouldn't have to sacrifice a buck.

Their attitude is so selfish it makes me sick. So no, they aren't evil, they're just self-centered jerks.

95% of Americans had a tax cut last year. If you mean health care, income taxes are not used. It's an excise tax.

40% of wage earners don't even pay any taxes. What 95% are you talking about?

income tax, social security tax, medicare tax, excixe tax, their all taxes. i wonder how many taxes we actually have in this country. not counting the price increase to pay for the taxes the rich pay.

That's true.

It is (partially) paid for by an excise tax.

An excise tax that doesn't exist yet, and won't exist until Obama is conveniently out of office.

Don't look for the excise tax to even be passed. The Dems of this congress didn't have the nerve to pass it during this session. Why would anyone believe that any other congress will suddenly amass the courage and will to do so?

Like I predicted, this bill has passed without any funding mechanism.

Walmart is an issue... if your remember, they used to only sell american made products, thats not true anymore.

Also when a walmart comes into a town, they will try to run out the small businesses by lowering the costs on those products to the point the small business can not compete.

They did pass it. It's now law. The implementation year is currently 2013 but once the reconciliation bill passes it will be 2018. Regardless, repealing it would very likely require 60 votes to break a Senate filibuster and it would certainly require a presidential signature (or 2/3 majorities in each chamber in the absence of that).

You might as well argue that the law doesn't ban pre-existing condition exclusions or create health insurance exchanges because neither will be implemented for a few years.

there are thousands. But you don't pay them all. So what's your point?

Hmmm...

Didn't they also pass a 20% cut in payments to Medicaid doctors in the past?

And, isn't this cut being restored right now as we post, just before it was to go into effect?

(As a matter of fact, this cut, which will shortly be restored, was factored in to the CBO budget estimates and played a very large part in them getting the numbers they wanted from the CBO. The cuts which they knew all along they would restore!)

The excise tax will have to survive the congress of 2018.

My prediction is that, just like the cuts to payments to doctors, it will not.
