A chef cooking a soup dish from cobra flesh died in China after he was bitten by the snake's head - 20 minutes after it was cut off.

Peng Fan was preparing the rare Asian delicacy from the Indochinese spitting cobra when the snake's severed head bit him with venom as he was throwing it into the bin,

Rigor Mortis was obviously setting in, or it was a reflex action of the muscles. Anyway, that head should have been handled carefully, the venom doesn't "die" with the cobra, unfortunately this chef learnt this the hard way.

I saw a documentary about snakes, one guy cut the head off a snake and its head and body was still alive for about 60 minutes, when the head bit the body and emptied the poison in it! Got to be careful when messing with deadly snakes!

The disembodied head is still alive the whole time, its eyes still move and it will wait and watch for an opportunity to bite. Snakes and Crocodiles and stuff run almost 100% on instinct alone. It's hard wired into them to react to certain situation in a certain may with lightening reflexes and no thinking. Unlike say a dog, which often pauses for thought before reacting and its actions are the sum of it's experience since birth. Snakes are predictable, dogs are not. I like dogs.

We were warned about this as kids regarding the local rattle snakes. even with the head chopped off, we could still get poisoned. You have to be careful with venomous snakes.

Perhaps this guy had some Karma coming? Reincarnation can be a bitc#.

Just carelessness by the chef, nothing really left to say.

The problem I have with the reflex explanation of this cobra bite is that the snake has to calculate where it is going to bite the hand. It is not just gyrating its fangs back and forth, the head knows where your fingers are and manipulates its mouth to strike a targeted piece of flesh, sometimes hours after the head is removed. It has to see, taste and calculate how to contort to achieve insertion.

How long can a snake's head live?

Yeah, a similar event happened to me when I was kid.

Visiting North Carolina at a friends cabin I walked down a trail and came across a coral snake, presumably basking in the sunshine.

Nearly stepped on the darn thing.

Anyway, I went back to the cabin, told them about it, and the owner took a shovel and cut-off it's head.

Sure enough, that dang snake head was still looking at me and had it's tounge out, licking the air.

I was told to keep back, and the owner buried the snake.

I'm thinking that if you actually want to eat a deadly snake you cut off the head and discard it. People do eat Rattlesnakes in the U.S., not sure what the attraction is, but I'm pretty sure they stretch the snake out and then lop off the business end before skinning, dicing, battering and frying.

How long can a snake's head live?

Not very.

The question you want is how long does the poison remain potent.

The venom can crystalise in the fangs and remain potent for years.

I've seen it done, but never eaten it. Supposedly tastes a lot like chicken.

It does seem that a snake has a much slower metabolism then a mammal, or bird, which die almost immediately if their head is cut off. I'd imagine that a snake's brain and musculature in the head would live for many minutes, if not a whole hour.

Chef killed by cobra as he tried to cook it? This is a clear case of self defense. The defense rests, your honour.

(Sorry Mr. Peng)
