New Features and Updates Progress

I've managed to get a few more of the new forum features up and running, and sorted a number of bugs that had cropped up.

Here's a list of the new features that have been enabled so far :

Avatar Uploading

You can now upload your own avatar images from your profile page. The size and dimension limits for uploaded avatars are included there also.

The size limit has been increased from 6kb to 15kb.

Private Messaging System

The Private Messaging system is a lot more sophisticated than the old YaBB one. When you receive a new message, a window will pop to let you know about it. You can save important IM's in a "savebox", so that you don't delete them by accident. I'll post more on the Private Messaging system and the %full status bar shortly.

Smilies - "Emoticons" In Posts

Smilies do not all appear at once every time you make a new post. Rather than have them all loading up on the page, only a select few will appear on the screen. You can click the "view more emoticons" option to bring up a window containing all of the others if you'd like to use them. This makes the posting screen load faster, and is somewhat less distracting than having 40 animated smilies dancing around while your trying to compose a message.

Hidden Users

If you don't want others seeing that you are currently logged into the forum, you can set an option in your profile to make you a "hidden" user. This will stop your username appearing at the bottom of the forum when you are logged in, and you will count as a "hidden" user instead.

Automatic Notifications

I can remember a few of you asking about automated notifications in the old forum. In the new forum you can set an option in your profile to automatically E-Mail you when someone has responded to your posts. Please make sure you switch this option off if you do not want E-Mail notifications of replies to your posts.

Posts Since last visit / view your posts / unanswered posts

There are three new options at the top right hand side of the main forum index which allow you view your own posts, all the posts that have been made since you last visited, and which posts have yet to be answered. This should make it a lot easier to check whats been happening since you were last logged in.

Plenty more new features and improvement still to come.

More new features :

File Attachments Module

The file attachments mod is now fully working, allowing you to upload images and other file types via the option on the posting screen. The filetypes and size limitations will likely be changed in the near future, but for the moment the file attachments system is working and fully functional.

Mini "Reply" Button In Threads

A minor addition - you no longer have to scroll all the way through a thread to get to the reply button, there is now a small "reply" button at the top of every post along with quote and edit.

Automatic Go To Last Post

This feature has already been working for the last few days, and I neglected to mention it previously. When you post a new topic or message, when the screen prompts you to select whether you'd like to view that post or return to the forum index - if you wait five seconds it will automatically take you to your last post without you needing to click on anything. Thanks to Loonboy for reminding me about that one.

A few more bug fixes :

- Fixed a bug where some posts would stretch all out of shape.

- Fixed posts so that the text isn't all squashed up to one end of the page.

- Added avatar size limit to external avatars in profiles

- Fixed the name of the forum index so it doesn't run off the end of the page.

That's it fixed - there was a line missing in one of the templates and the uploads folder was read only.

It still says the limit is 0 bytes for some reason, even though it should work perfectly now. The actual maximum size is 75k.

Let me know if you have any other problems with the attachments.

I take it if your inbox is 246% full, it's time to clean it out? :s2 :s3

Hi Tommy, good to hear from you - hows things at Uni ?

Yeah, the inbox has a size assigned to it, which I haven't really set up yet. For the moment ignore the % size, but I suppose you could say that with 200% + you could do with sorting out those IM's.
