Recent Bill Maher quote on taxes

"I just want to say liberals — you could actually lose me. It's outrageous what we're paying — over 50 percent. I'm willing to pay my share, but yeah, it's ridiculous,"

Evidently, he never realized that the top 10% pay 70% of the burden in this country.

Just because the top have more money doesn't mean that they should pay more. Where is it written that it is ones duty to pay more of your money to the government if you are wealthy? The top 10% should pay 10% and the bottom 10% should pay 10% and if the government can't deal with that and stay within their means, they need to start cutting spending. How more fair can that be?

Actually the bottom 50% ( < $32,000 ) gets a little more in deductions. They effectively pay about 2%.

The top 10% of wage earners should pay 100% of the income taxes. The bottom 90% should pay 0.

If 50% of Americans pay no income taxes, we're half-way home.

Careful, your Socialist side is showing. If you hate welfare so much, what do you think will create more welfare than the solution you just presented?

ummmmmmmmmmmm, BULL! not only do I pay around 12% to 15% out of every check, I also pay taxes every time I purchase something. I would say that easily 20% of every dollar I make get taken out in taxes. And single, no children (dependants) not a home owner, what the F deductions are you talking about?

so you would give the rich a huge abomination of a tax break, and destroy just about every government service. well done. not.

10% of a billion is what? $100,000??

that's a shedload of cash in tax. 10% is a drop in anyone's ocean, rich or poor can pay 10% with even the most rudimentary budget.

I saw that show. I don't like Bill much but it appears as he gets older, common sense may be creeping into his mind.

Taxation is a crime against humanity. It is a special kind of theft.

You are taxed when you earn your money.

You are taxed when you spend your money (sales tax)

You are taxed every year if you "buy" real property (cars and homes)

You are taxed if you invest the money you have earned (and already paid taxes on) into stocks and bonds and make money that way.

You are taxed when you die (estate tax)

You are taxed if a family member dies and leaves you money or property (inheritance tax)

Criminal.

I understand that there are things that need to be done (bridges, roads, water, infrastructure and defense). I understand that no one person or group should have to bear that burden...so we all contribute to a fund to get those things done. We elect people to oversee and carry out these "chores"...

Somewhere along the way, the basic premise got perverted, warped and twisted. It is no longer about serving the community and carrying out it's needs, wishes. It has become a cash cow for the corrupt. It is a broken system and only a total collapse and reboot is going to get it back on track.

Personally, I keep thinking this may be the only answer...

We, for the most part, got along fine without income taxes.. until 1913 ..and the first ones were on Corporations... not individuals.

I think there should be a minimum tax for everyone. If your over 18 you pay 1000 a year, as a token investment into the economy. If you don't have it, then you do community service till it is paid. How long would that really take? 100 hours? 3 weeks? I think the Poor should as fully embrace this as the Rich should do for paying more.

I think it is interesting that it is not specified if that the "effective rate" is a after tax return rate or not. Because if it is a after return rate, then if you are at a 50% rate, but an effective rate of 15%, then the government is actually holding and using your extra 35% till you ask for it back. If the government uses that money right, it is getting a 3 to 4% return on that money. You never hear about the money that the government makes off "borrowing" your own money.

They could do community service instead. Is three weeks stretched over 52 weeks going to kill someone who is unemployed, or on food stamps, or welfare, or just poor?

this is precisely why a flat tax is unfair. And why our tax system does not do this.

What would be unfair about everyone contributing in their own equitable fashion? Why should 40% (or whatever the rate is) of Americans receive back more money then they paid in, and all public programs then be paid (in the main) for by the Rich?

I'm not against taxing the rich, but let us not pretend that the System of Taxation is Fair.

If everyone contributes in some fashion, that is the very Social Definition of FAIR.

Well the US government spends about 3.5 trillion a year. http://go.bloomberg.com/multimedia/how-much-does-the-u-s-government-spend/

There are around 315 million people in the US. http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html

So simple math for a flat tax would be $11,111 per person.

So a married couple would have to pay $22,222 a year and a family of four $44,444.

Thats not counting state and local taxes however.

On the positive note, it would simplify the tax system.

The negative side is the whole having to pay $44,444 for your family of four in order to cover your fair share.

I agree to a point. There should be a set amount where the taxation starts, for instance one would pay nothing for taxes until they made over 30,000 (just an arbitrary figure). Then every dime should be taxed at the same percentage. That would help those that are truly poor, and allow every tax payer to pay the same amount.
