Maybe he isn't really Hispanic but it sounds like to me Richardson can't stand the fact he is anti-immigration or is he really anti-illegal immigration. I don't think we should bend over backwards for the illegals.

my eldest son is black. saying that guy isn't hispanic because the other guy thinks he's a lousy politician is like denying my son his mother's parentage because he's a chef, it doesn't make sense.....

OBTW, saying that most Hispanics are in favor of immigration reform does not mean that they are in favor of amnesty. It the same Socialist agenda that claims that 90% of Americans want background checks (Manchin-Toomey Amendment of S649) means that they support the unintended legislative consequences of gun control.

Ted Cruz was born in Canada so cannot ever be elected president.

This has nothing to do with his ethnicity or culture.

The point Richardson was saying is that if you are a democrat and believe that illegals deserve amnesty then you are a real Hispanic. If you are a Republican and believe in closing the border, then you are not a Hispanic. But of course, that isn’t racist because a democrat said it.

I know several Hispanics who came here LEGALLY and they DON'T want amnesty for illegals. They feel it is a huge slap in the face to them, who came here legally and worked their butts off. So to say all Hispanics want amnesty for illegals is just not true.

Do you know how much money this is going to cost us??

Illegal Immigration Costs U.S. $113 Billion a Year, Study Finds

The report states that an amnesty program wouldn’t appreciably increase tax revenue and would cost massive amounts in Social Security and public assistance expenses. An amnesty “would therefore be an accentuation of the already enormous fiscal burden,” the report concludes.

The single largest cost to the government of illegal immigration, according to the report, is an estimated $52 billion spent on schooling the children of illegals. “Nearly all those costs are absorbed by state and local governments,’ the report states.

Moreover, the study’s breakdown of costs on a state-by-state basis shows that in states with the largest number of illegals, the costs of illegal immigration are often greater than current, crippling budget deficits. In Texas, for example, the additional cost of immigration, $16.4 billion, is equal to the state’s current budget deficit; in California the additional cost of illegal immigration, $21.8 billion, is $8 billion more than the state’s current budget deficit of $13.8 billion; and in New York, the $6.8 billion deficit is roughly two-thirds the $9.5 billion yearly cost of its illegal population, according to Jack Martin, the researcher who completed the study.

“The most important finding of the study is the enormous cost to state and local governments due to lack of enforcement of our immigration laws,” Martin wrote.

The report found that the federal government paid $28.6 billion in illegal related costs, and state and local governments paid $84.2 billion on an estimated 13 million undocumented residents. In his speech, Obama estimated that there are 11 million.

When will Washington STOP spending money we don't have?

Ted Cruz was born in Canada so cannot ever be elected president.

This has nothing to do with his ethnicity or culture.

He is a US Citizen and according to the preponderance of current case law would most likely be considered Natural Born and therefore eligible to hold the office.

The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service has even weighed in on the issue, writing in November 2011 that people born to U.S. citizens in foreign countries “most likely” qualify as natural-born citizens.

“The weight of more recent federal cases, as well as the majority of scholarship on the subject, also indicates that the term ‘natural born citizen’ would most likely include, as well as native born citizens, those born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents, at least one of whom had previously resided in the United States, or those born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent who, prior to the birth, had met the requirements of federal law for physical presence in the country,” wrote CRS’s Jack Maskell.

This subject hits very close to home for me because I've had to deal with this all my life. I've had to deal with people like Senator Richardson just about everyday when it comes to race and self-identity. My father is Mexican-Native American mixed and my mom is Spaniard-Mexican mixed when it came to me: I was a white colored, blonde haired, green eyed individual who really doesn't look anything like the "stereotypical" Mexican. At school, I got "you're Hispanic? No you're not, quit lying!" even from teachers. Even to this day, I get, "You're a pretty cool white guy..." to which I just respond with

Like Kowalski wrote above, there is a high feeling of resentment in the Mexican American community towards those that are trying to circumvent the system but people like Senator Richardson says that you can't possibly be Hispanic if you don't agree with the plight of the illegal immigrant. I'd like to see him say that to a lot of my compadres in the barrio... ;)

I'm the same way. I've got a white last name and look white as hell, and people can't believe I'm half Mexican. I've got some friends like this also. I wish people stopped looking at race and just dealt with actual problems instead of using it to further their agendas. Dems like to think they're compassionate but they're the ones that use and perpetuate stereotypes.

First class idiot! I must admit that started off liking him and thought I’d give this democrat a chance. That’s the last time I will ever give a democrat a chance. We had sanctuary cities and he allowed illegals to get driver’s licenses. If this state doesn’t repeal this, then next year, I won’t be able to use my driver’s license to fly or enter any kind of federal building or lands unless I bring along my passport. My usual form of ID will be meaningless. Let’s not forget that before being governor, he was Secretary of Energy (DOE) and it was under his watch that many secrets were stolen by China. Some say it was enough to build the J20.

Illegals are criminals!

"Most likely" means it can be challenged in court.

Tthe clause "natural born" in the Constitution is significant and every president or nominee before who has come under this shadow has never had it addressed in court.

We have a majority of opinion from lawmakers, if the conversation continues we will see opinion from cable news, and from ordinary citizens such as me or you chiming in. We might even see people from the UK giving their opinion lol

But if taken to court the only opinion that would matter is the judges and somewhat the lawyers if they seek out appeals giving it to another judge to decide. The possibility of injunction is also there but most likely it won't even go as far as the courts.

Whatever is decided, if needed to be, will most likely favor Cruz but would Cruz himself even agree with anything but a judicial decision or his own interpretation of the Constitution?

Ted Cruz himself is a constitutional originalist. It is likely the opinion of a few lawyers or others such as us will cause him to loosely interpret the Constitution. Ted Cruz seemingly goes by the letter of this document, to the tee, does not beleive it is a "living document" and therefore has to be followed as the framers intended.

The most important questions will be: how does Ted Cruz view the term "natural born" and does he apply it to himself?

I agree with you guys. I too am of mixed ethnicity. I have documents/birth records stating I am part Alaska Native and have my BIA card that says the same thing. But I have light(er) skin and green eyes. I often would get rude remarks from Native functions/events or trips to the Alaska Native Medical Center. I have heard "You're not native" many times and unfortunately, most of the racism I have experienced has been from Natives. But my 'people' do not have the monopoly on it, many so-called progressives I have communicated with pretend to have compassion and empathy. But it is often diluted and/or it is an outright lie. Do they do that to make themselves feel better? I really do not know... I do think some of it comes out subconsciously. And I do believe many voted for the current admin under that (possibly misguided) premise. Almost as if they were so afraid of being called a racist that they voted the way they did.

I am pure blooded WASP, but I grew up here all my life so for all practical purposes, I’m culturally Hispanic. There are European Spanish here with Blonde hair and blue eyes. There are many people here that are mixed with a Hispanic fathers and Anglo mothers. Part of my extended family is half Irish (father) and a quarter Mexican. They have red hair and freckles. There was an incident of reverse discrimination that occurred years ago, when their Hispanic teacher treated them poorly in school. During an open house, the maternal grandmother came by and started talking Spanish to the kids and got them embarrassed. They said stop it grandma. I have a feeling that the grandma did it on purpose in front of the teacher because after that, the kids received better treatment. It’s unfortunate that that still occurs here but it also shows the diversity. There are Spanish and Portuguese families here from the original Land Grants, who are all Americans. None of the people I’ve represented here want illegals to have amnesty. But they do want the border closed. They are willing to see a pathway to citizenship, but the illegal must pay the penalty of being here illegally. It is a crime. Illegals are not isolated, all of us here know illegals and have befriended them and I think if they need to be, become a sponsor. You’ll find that sponsors would be coming out of the woodwork, provided that the illegal is willing to pay the penalty and show that they truly want to be an American citizen. Then we can begin to call them brother and sister, instead of thief.
