Huge foreign policy gain by G. Bush

This is a great example of conservatism in action. I can already predict how the liberals and leftist, who declared missile defense can't work...will try to spin this.

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin, bitterly opposed to a U.S. missile shield in Europe, told President Bush on Thursday that Moscow would drop its objections if the radar-based system were installed in Azerbaijan.

Putin told Bush he would not seek to retarget Russian missiles on Europe if the United States agreed to put the system in the central Asian nation of Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic.

Bush's called Putin's idea an "interesting proposal—let's let our experts have a look at it," according to White House National Security Adviser Steve Hadley. Hadley was in their hourlong meeting on the sidelines of a summit of the world's eight major industrialized democracies.

Bush has proposed putting the radar and rockets in the Czech Republic and Poland. After weeks of increasingly acrimonious rhetoric from Moscow about the new shield, Putin's proposal to put the system in Azerbaijan was a surprise.

Putin said the facility, built during Soviet times, is still available for Russia's use under a continuing agreement between Russia and Azerbaijan.

Appearing together before reporters, the president spoke before Putin and did not mention the alternative presented by his Russian counterpart. He only said that Putin "had some interesting suggestions."

The two leaders agreed to further discuss the issue during two days of talks beginning July 1 in Kennebunkport, Maine, at the Bush family's oceanfront compound. Lower-level officials in both governments also plan to explore it.

"We both agreed to have a strategic dialogue," Bush said. "This is a serious issue."

The Russian leader said the proposed relocation would alleviate Russia's concerns about a missile shield based on its doorstep in Eastern Europe.

"This will make it unnecessary for us to place our offensive complexes along the border with Europe," Putin said.

He laid out several other conditions, as well:

_Taking Russia's concerns into account.

_Giving all sides "equal access" to the system.

_Making the development of the system transparent.

"Then we will have no problem," the Russian leader said.

He also warned the United States not to go ahead with building the system as planned while negotiations with Moscow take place.

"We hope these consultations will not serve as cover for some unilateral action," Putin said.

He argued the benefits of his suggested substitute: An Azerbaijan- based system would cover all of Europe rather than just part of it and destroyed missile debris would fall in the ocean rather than on land.

Hadley did not rule out the possibility that the end result would be some mix of the Russian and the U.S. proposals.

"We asked the Russians to cooperate with us on missile defense, and what we got was a willingness to do so," Hadley said after the Bush- Putin meeting.

Both sides portrayed the idea—far from becoming a reality—as proof that the U.S.-relationship has not fallen so far as people have speculated amid the dispute. The leaders said they agreed that Iran and the suspicions that it is developing a nuclear weapon is the threat to focus on, not each other.

"We have an understanding about common threats, but we have differences," Putin said.

He declared himself "satisfied with the spirit of openness" he encountered in Bush. The U.S. president said they had demonstrated they share "the desire to work together to allay people's fears."

The two leaders, locked for weeks in a testy dispute over the shield, appeared friendly as they spoke on the grounds of the upscale resort here where the summit is being held. They stood so close they often touched.

"I'd like to confirm what the president of the United States has said—except for one thing: I've not said that friends do not act in this way," Putin said, to which both laughed heartily and jostled each other.

why they would critize Bush?

He had a plan, Putin objeted it, and both enegociate (i presume Bush concede there) it soo Russia can get a benefit of it. I just see a brinnk of common sense on Bush international politics, for a change, instead of "conservatism in action".

I'm not sure why you see this in the way you do, Aztec. I know you're a multi-dimensional thinker, so maybe you see something here that I don't.

I don't seee why liberals would be grinding their teeth over this, as it stands. In fact, many see this as a very clever move by Putin, which has knocked Bush "back on his heals." That's the exact quote ABC News said today as I watched it just now.

All this does in the short term is delay for several months the decision about where the missile defense system will go. The Azer. site will probaly be rejected for technical reasons -- and the system will end up in Czec. anyway. That will probably cause the Russians to re-target their missiles to the west.

That's really a restiring of the Cold War -- hardly a victory for Bush, or anyone else, really.

When they honor him as traitor and idiot, I'll be front and center!

Otherwise, his foreign policy accomplishments have thus far been to make our borders less secure, give our Eastern seaboard ports to United Arab Emirates and our citizens social security trust, to illegal criminal trespassing Mexican aliens! That happens when an idiot from Texas thinks that's what Foreign Policy, means!

I obviously touched a "liberal sore spot." Notice how only liberals responded to a clear conservative victory in foreign policy achievement. Bush and Putin have...instead of a new arms race...will work together to prevent rogue states from starting another war. Anyone paying attention will view this as a foreign policy achievement by any standards.

What I see here is.... first, Putin using cold war language to actually gain some foothold with Bush. Putin also realizes that Iran/N. Korea etc. are loose cannon's and that the Russians have believed and invested in missile defense for years. This is a way for them to achieve a cost effective system while encouraging east/west relations. No real downside to any agreement here. Iron, only a few conservatives remain in the Democratice party, and you won't hear any Dem Presidential candidates praise this agreement.............hence a republican political victory. Tell me where my analysis is askeu.

What amazes me is the conservative whine , when the record of , "They call him W because he can spell it", is on hard copy and yet, "Liberals" just don't understand. But what is truly partisan myopic about that is, loyalties mean nothing! When we all live with what he does!

One doesn't show their conservative ID card and it all goes away. No. It's history. Policy. And forever, until repealed. And we all live with that. So, please, do continue to excuse the commander in thief that has sold this country out to cronyism and foreign interests, and our grandparents will continue to have to choose, in many cases, between eating and affording their medication. Because we the people that are employed in this country, if our jobs weren't outsourced overseas, need to work twice as hard as we did before W got into office, because millions of illegal criminal trespassers, depend upon us for their social security! And if the politician's in D.C. have anything to say about it, after they board those semi-trucks that are exempt from inspection at our southern border, thanks yet again to his grasp of foreign policy in a time when I can't fly with a bottle of shampoo in my bag because it might be an explosive, and come to a social security office near you, they'll be able to go back across that border and have our hard earned, that becomes their social security, mailed to them in Mexico!

Hell yes! I can understand they hate me for my freedom. That's why I have to wait to buy that shampoo at my destination. Because it's a matter of national & airport security. Because "Suave" could be a weapon. But meanwhile, that dual semi (two trailers together behind one tractor) , precludes any illegal former belly crawling across the desert illegal trespassing piece of work, from having to brave the trials and travails of exposure in the sun. They can instead ride in refrigerated comfort, all the way to their destination! And when those illegals, in that exempt from inspection semi-truck duelly arrive, they can get paid to be here, after they are legally permitted to lie on the social security application form, when that offense would not only get me denied the money, but would stand to land me with three hots and a cot, thanks to big brother! So he can appear as if he's working to make America socially secure.

And after I'm incarcerated, I'll call my attorney. But I'll have to wait for the prompt that asks me if I'd like to continue in English or Español . And when I hit that button, I may very well hear the American anthem in Spanish, singing to me while I wait! And when that call is picked up, I'll maybe stand a chance of getting out on bail, while I await trial. Unless I'm deemed a person of interest, because I dared lie to get myself fed on the social security I thought I assured myself when I was young, healthy and able to work. In that case, worst cast scenario, I'll be held for three days, without that attorney or even an arraignment on the charge! And maybe, while awaiting those 72 hours to click on by, if it happens to be one of those years where the whores in DC pimp for me to rock my vote, I'll read a newspaper that affords me the opportunity to decide whether or not I wish to cast my ballot to make English the official language of this country!

God bless America! Because I left my Vaseline in my other country and that is a pityable shame, because just when I was looking I noticed.....That the Republicans are the ones that did it all, as the former majority before this last election call! linked-image

You can't be serious. First, it's highly doubtful that bush will agree to this. He's the decider and beleives Russia is the evil empire - regardless of what they claim in press conferences. Second, a single foreign policy accomplishment, should it ever come to pass, hardly makes him a good president or will have any effect on the 2008 election. You can't remove constitutional freedoms over and over and then think no one will notice. You've shown a very clear lack of understanding about American politics. Really, it's nothing. A drop in the an immense sesspool of corruption. Next you'll be claiming that bush's "new" global warning strategy is good. Or that it's ok for administration departments to violate repeatedly the Hatch act. Or that they've suddenly found the WMD's! You haven't hit any nerves because bush is over and no one cares.

Ah! Now we see what their real concern was all along! It had nothing to do with a balance of powere in Europe! They knew that it was a good idea and they wanted it also, they just didn't want to have to pay for it.

I don't seee why liberals would be grinding their teeth over this...
It was around this time two years ago that a lot on the left were saying that a missile defence shield was a waste of money and would never work. Just the other day they were saying that it is so super duper that it scaring the Russians and could be the impedous for a new cold war. Now, the Russians want to get a piece of the defence sheild that would never work but later scared them to the brink of a new cold war and finally, they just didn't want to pay for a defence against the missiles that we've been asking them not to sell to the radicals in the first place. That looks a lot like three for three right there. You know, in Georgia, this is the part where everybody points, laughs and calls the person a silly name.

He's the decider and beleives Russia is the evil empire
Uhh, no. That is what Reagan said about the Soviet Union. Although Russia was a part of the U.S.S.R. at one time, it is not the same nation Reagan was refering to. Also, "W" is no "Ronnie". Edited by Lord Umbarger

It doesn't work and it won't work. Just the other day, yet ANOTHER test of it failed again.

Unless of course you mean we can use it to bully others. Then it will work great. Remember SDI was the primary reason the USSR threw in the towel. They couldn't keep up.

Yes I know Ronnie said it and I beleive that mindset still exists in the mind of our shrub of a president. He can't think for himself.

Putin seems to think so. Besides, the system that we are planning to install isn't a hemisphere ICBM defence type system. It is basically a glorified Patriot missile system, that DOES work. In the 1960's we had a system called the Nike Missile system. It would've worked had it ever been needed. The newer system is a natural progression of that one.

Just the other day, yet ANOTHER test of it failed again.
So, when should we start looking into solving it's problems then? Should we wait until the bombs are falling and then start working out the bugs? Bare in mind, we have been working on a cure for AIDS for roughly the same amount of time, a little longer I think. Should we give up on that too?

I beleive that mindset still exists in the mind of our shrub of a president. He can't think for himself.
Fair enough. To each their own. Edited by Lord Umbarger
