CJ1983 Posted November 17, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 17, 2015 http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/11/13/us-centralafrica-violence-idUSKCN0T21S120151113#ArVrhQWzb5VHe9hA.97 http://www.inquisitr.com/2568991/farm-murders-in-south-africa-continue-as-paris-like-cecil-the-lion-get-more-attention/ Just wanted to get this out there. Not all of the world can tweet about their atrocities and make them go "viral" overnight. I understand the Paris attacks were a tragedy but why does no one care about the rest of the world, these 2 articles only cover a small amount of the murders that happen daily all over the Central and South Africa regions. Also Cecil the Lion has been killed recently, maybe that will help get the word out, people seem to care more about him than the 44 dead farmers in South Africa.
Likely Guy Posted November 17, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 17, 2015 You're sadly right. In mainstream North American journalism there is an adage, "If it bleeds, it leads". But I forget the formula that they used to also use. It was something like, "A European/North American life is like 5 South American lives, 50 Asian lives and 500 African lives." That's actually how they would organize the headlines and pages in a newspaper. Sadly, nothing has changed.
Imaginarynumber1 Posted November 17, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 17, 2015 (edited) It's not "close to home". Same reason no one cared about the ebola outbreak until it crossed the ocean. The threat becomes all the more real at that point and sells more papers/drives more web traffic. The media is first and foremost a business, unfortunately. SHaYap Posted November 17, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 17, 2015 The adage adopted of not letting the facts getting in the way of a good story hardly helps ~
Crabby Kitten Posted November 17, 2015 #5 Share Posted November 17, 2015 Because many people didn't know about it. Ask the news why they bury other serious atrocities and focus on another. Why the media always focuses on Maddie Mcann and ignores other missing children. It's not anyone who doesn't care, it's the media who are selective.
spartan max2 Posted November 17, 2015 #6 Share Posted November 17, 2015 because sadly this happens all the time in Africa, it never happens in France. The same reason no one cares if there is a shooting in the ghetto but freak out if its in a school. Not saying its right but it is human nature,we get use to it being in certain places and freak out if its somewhere new
