As far back as his memory could be induced to recollect no human being had ever seen or heard him except as he had elected to be perceived. And as pecuniary as his predilections ran, this monopoly on the awareness of his objectives did not constitute his loneliness, but rather the relief from it. Do all misled people mislead people? Is ego the surrogate for inspiration, so that being led inspires while being misled synthesizes this perverse enthusiasm egotism?
