The ego is a quality of all misled people. The person portrayed certainly misleads us. Do all misled people mislead people? Is ego the surrogate for inspiration, so that being led inspires while being misled synthesizes this perverse enthusiasm egotism?

The ego is a necessary component of good mental health as long as it is balanced by the id and superego. It isn't always a bad thing.
