      This is heartbreaking and avoidable.  It happens every year and it destroys lives and families.  I saw a wonderful technique that can GUARANTEE that it never happens again.  When you place the child in the back, remove your left shoe and put it next to the child.  I think it should be a law in the summer, in the south.
