Scott Talks Monopoly Movie
Gladiator helmer playing game adaptation.

US, August 6, 2007 - Ridley Scott, the brilliant filmmaking mind behind such extraordinary films as Alien and Gladiator, is venturing into rather new territory for an upcoming movie based on the classic Parker Brothers board game Monopoly. ... And the universe let out a thunderous, collective "WTF!?" This is the guy who is rumored to have turned down Halo because he didn't see enough potential for a story.

The news first broke back in June that Scott was interested in directing a comedy-thriller based on the game. Now, Scott has dished a little to the Los Angeles Times about his thoughts on the film.

"Monopoly is still the most popular board game -- I might be misquoting! -- in the world. So it's really finding the universe for that game," he explains. "Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family -- the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and -- in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what's it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You're witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film." Oh, boy.

While actresses Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst have been rumored to be on the casting wishlist for the project, there is absolutely no hint at what the film's story might entail.

Would the movie even feature Mr. Monopoly, the monocle-sporting mascot character who appears in the logo? Unclear. link

it's official, they have finally run out of original ideas.

Why don't they just make a movie on Hungry Hungry Hippo's?

This is exactly why I don't like or have any interest in the vast majority of contemporary films.

The worst thing is people will go and see it and it will probably make a lot of money and thus considered a success, then we can all look froward to the hungry, hungry hippo's movie in a matter of months.

I WOULD SEE THAT!!!!

I think if they filmed a family playing monopoly it would be more exciting then a movie based on the game.

I know when my family Play Monopoly its like watching the God Father crossed with the Departed crossed with oceans 11

All that happens is they've written a script for a story about rich people cheating and conning each other on the property ladder - and then decided to call it monoploy to cash in on the name. Its the same as with other Franchises - make a movie that has nothing to do with the existing Franchise but use the title to sell it e.g. Resident evil, not a terrible zombie movie, but has very little in common with the video games.

so far I can't find anything on IMDB for it. And I agree, Talon, that sounds like what they would do. Goofy Hollywood

Monopoly doesn't have any hint of a storyline to it. Clue had a plot and characters at least. You could even do something with a Risk movie...but Monopoly?

What is this movie even going to be about? Considering this has to be nothing over a PG rating...you can't even get creative and make it about people fighting over bussiness investments(like a ganster movie but with rich people instead of mobsters) or something.

Monopoly the "comedic-thriller"...whats next Hungry Hungry Hippos the "wildlife documentary" or Chess: The movie a "War time drama"

I bet we could pitch 'UM the movie' and somebody in Hollywood would make it..

halo may be popular among gamers , but to the majority of people - they have no clue. It would end up in the realm of Resident Evil. It not doing bad , but no where near great.

I think Monopoly could be pulled off but only by Mel Brooks and done in the vein like It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

it really is sad that the majority of movies today are only created for massive profit for their companies and affiliates. i can't remember the last time i've actually watched a movie all the way through. the stories these days are just so boring and redundant. a lot of the plot lines are a mixture or an outright copy of previous movies' story lines. people just do not care anymore about seeing truly original movies anymore. it's sad.
