It's called an exaggeration, often used to express a point.
The creature may have been angry or slightly perturbed. Or, it may have been trying to ward off predators: "Get out of my way, here I come!" Or, the ground may have been soggy, and it was trying to walk flat-footed so as not to sink into it. Or, it may have been trying to avoid tripping on high brush or fallen trees.
There are many reasons to go high-stepping through the woods, but nevertheless, its stride reminded me of an angry child.
