I think the stripes are bands of sunlight as he says

Theres some other great Carl Sagan quotes here:

As for the cosmos being 'incomprehensively, mindbogglingly vast' , this pic does a good job of showing just how insignificant our star is even in our own galaxy (nevermind the 539 billion other galaxies)

Donteatus, theres some more great images here -kept me busy for hours original.gif

      NASA archive:
      http://apod.nasa.gov...archivepix.html

Theres also some amazing pics coming out of Arizona where theres no light pollution-when you think we can only see two galaxies from Earth (depending on which hemisphere you're stood in) its all a bit staggering.

Flagstaff now enjoys the status of being the first International Dark Sky City, and maintains a lighting code that limits lights from polluting this majestic nighttime view. The current dark skies over Flagstaff not only enable local astronomers to decode the universe but allow local sky enthusiasts to see and enjoy a tapestry contemplated previously by every human generation. The above image, pointing just east of north, was taken two weeks ago at 3 am from Fort Valley, only 10 kilometers from central Flagstaff.

Some great pics heres showing non light polluted, digitaly enhanced, double long exposure shots of the Milky way in the night sky:

he says in one similar video the band of light that the earth looks like it's in sunlight is a reflection of sunlight off the spacecraft.

I've always looked up to carl sagan since i was like 3. we should petition to the government so we can have a carl sagan monument just for him being epic, and then another one for all of his contributions to science and humanity. grin2.gif cool.gif
