in 2006, January- I was invited as a spoke person for the National Historical Institute in the Philippines, more of a guest that a speaker, since all I did was give comments and ideas to local professors and educators. Then I was invited again at the University of the University for the same purpose. There I met Professor J.M. (I will hide his initials because that is the legal thing to do since I did not ask permission to mention his name in this letter) this fellow teaches and deans over at another university; Polytechnique University of the Philippines (PUP); the full six floor for the Arts Bachelor Of History was under his wing. (pls understand that I need to be limited in these information for legal reasons as well. This is where it all started.

After my appearance in PUP the good professor gave me a contract for 3 years to teach at both universities which he was greatly affiliated with which I delightfully signed, then he introduce me to the countries local history and folklore, he claims that in his own words "old world demons and monsters still exist". Naturally there was a small debate between us. Then out of my rumbunctiosness, I told him we should do an investigative study on that since he was so sure about this. It was a bluff because I got the idea that he was joking or simply testing my mantle as a professional. To my dismay it was not.

I went back to the states by Feb. to teach and file a leave with my university and by June I went back to teach in the Philippines. From June to August, I never heard of the investigative study that I proposed with professor J.M. In early September was when he approached me, I have already forgotten about it altogether, he said that we will do not need to go far for this little experiment, he said that it was within the next city, which he said was at least an hour drive away. I agreed. We would go to this residential house by 7:00 pm and would spend the night there. I was poorly prepared, I did not take him seriously, and he picked me up at my condominium unit with me carrying a lap top. in his SUV there were other people that I later learned as students in PUP and were Koreans. He gave us some papers to read regarding our subject, an "ASWANG". the paper included references from religious books and folklore. It was described on those texts and my impression was it was their local version of vampires and boogeyman crossbreed. It said that it had a taste for pregnant women, fetuses, old dying people, and babies. It was utter nonsense to me at first. we arrived at a residential subdivision in Quezon City; the village is strangely enough named. "TEACHER'S VILLAGE". it was near the U.P. and to note, U.P also has a village next to this one. the village name was given to it by a previous president Ferdinand Marcos to teachers. (the rest is history on this topic). The house was owned by a family of 3, they were well-off. it was a 1 floor house. their daughter was pregnant. A student of professor J.M. I never got the connection, nor did I understood why we stayed there, I just went along with what I presumed was a practical Joke by the Prof. Past around 11 pm we were discussing and sharing views about ancient beliefs in the supernatural and possible scientific explanation to this, the discussion was long, it was mostly a dialogue between me and the prof with the 2 Korean nodding heads once in a while, we spoke English most of the time because I do not understand the local language, Korean nor Filipino. The talks went on till 2 am. the professor was showing a video of cult practices and ethnical shamanism in the country, all historical and documentation in nature which he was incorporating to the topic which was the ASWANG.

Then it came, at 2am, the professor turned down the audio and demanded us to keep silent and to listen, he wanted us to hear. and we heard, to me it was a crowing of some sort of bird, like a giant crow or a macaw.
The professor said that it was the TIKTIK, he claims that to local folklore these were familiars (assistants) or accomplices to the ASWANG. I thought him crazy. then a loud crash on the roof top, then heavy footsteps, walking from here to there. it was a cat it need to weight an at least 100 lbs to make such a ruckus on galvanized iron roofing. it was walking from left to right, back and front, you could count the steps made which is unbelievable, it took only like 5 steps from the far left end of the roofing to the other end, compared to what I can do which is at least 20 long strides. and it took at lease 3 steps from back to front. me being a normal 6 feet American would do this with8 long strides. I wasn’t afraid, not yet. after a couple of more rounds of it walking around. we heard the most agonizing scratching that I ever heard, I imagine that it was trying to claw its way thru. if you run a blunt knife at a mirror, you multiply that sound3 folds. then it stopped. next was the most horrifying thing I had ever. The whole roof was booming! it was trying to pry the roof above our heads! and the roof, as galvanized as it shook to the core. I didn’t know what to think, it was no way possible. I was thinking this was a prank, over and over again. a few more hours the neighbors turned their houses lights on and went out to investigate with flash lights and butcher knifes and the likes, we could see them out the house. they were calling at the owner of the house with language I didn’t understand, but you’d pick up the word "Aswang" repeated. I didn’t realized I was afraid until I ran out of the house, I later found out that the Koreans ran with me and also professor J.M. There surrounded by the locals who were doing a not so bad English welcomed me and tried to explain the situation, they said that this has been going on for a week now as they noticed. by 4 the local cops arrived, tried to pacify everyone in the area, I kept quiet, (trust me, if you’re a foreigner in a foreign land it’s always best to keep quiet and let the locals do their business). I learned from the local informant people that this would be the 3rd report that they had connected to this house and incident, saying that it was first thought that a burglar was trying to get into the house. later that morning I checked the house and that’s when I found that the roof was galvanized G.I. steel. I also learned from the locals and their folklore that this was a common thing among houses that sheltered pregnant women, newly born, or old dying people.

I and Prof J.M. are in good terms, though im still not convinced regarding that incident about the Aswang. This is my last year here in the Philippines and I plan to do further research on this. I went back to Roanoke last May to bid my love ones and colleague goodbye.

You see the reason as to why I never made this official.
I went back last week to settle my finances with my bank. Obviously this endeavor that im working on is causing me great financial lost. Im have been researching, investigating this all over this country and has found nothing more than tell-tale signs, stories and folklore as good as the next town can offer.
If you know anything about this or has something to share, your hypothesis and comments is greatly appreciated.

of course what ruined the Aswang stories for me was the shoddy 'made at home' hoax photos that would pop up now and then. It did the phenomenon a great deal more harm than generate interest. Also I was talking to some friends in Luzon who had heard the stories about the Aswang, and the description seemed more like a creature from a Jim Henson studio than anything terrestrial. I would love to read up on some more sightings, but unfortunately (as you would certianly know) the religious aspect of the country can create sightings from mundane and explainable phenomenon. Much like the Chupacabra craze that swept the strong catholic communities of south and central america it's become hard to find anything that doesn't seem like a re-hash of a previous sighting or isn't tainted with the smell of pop culture.

However your comments regarding the pregnancy and young children aspect really amazed me.

The original Mothman witnesses all had young children, and after for several weeks after their sightings reported strange visitors in their homes. They even banded together and reported their stories to one another via the telephone.

Several weeks after Linda and Roger Scarberry's encounter we know that Poltergeist phenomenon took hold in the household, forcing them to flee to live with her mother and father (The McDaniel's - who would also become witnesses - Mrs McDaniels would see the creature over Tiny's Diner). What wasn't told was the strange ethereal presence that revolved around her baby daughter. All of the mother's who were witnesses kept in close contact with each other, and each reported that strange poltergeist phenomenon revolved around their children.

It all came to a climax when Mrs Scarberry was awoken one night to find a man smoking a cigarette and wearing a checkered shirt standing over her daughters crib. Within a few moments the mysterious intruder disappeared into the ether. Interestingly Connie Christiansen (no relation to Connie Carpenter) after her sighting of a UFO in New Jersey lso reported a man in a red checkered shirt who she once observed was standing over her bed.

It's interesting when the phenomenon seems to cross continents.

In grade school I knew a girl who's mother is Filipino. I got to hear all about the aswang and other creepy entities in the Philippines. Those stories never failed to scare the crap out of me, and I still read up about them once in a while. I'd love to know more.

1. the name is an AKA. it's a contradiction to the persona. youd think i'd use this name in the real world?
2.you have a poor grasp of english for a american- that should be "an" and not a -(a american). if you found things that i need to edit pls say so that i could revise what needs revising.
3. its balony if you dont have a carreer to take care of or you work as a profesional critic. trust me, once you are a profesional you'd know
4. you have all the right to think that way. like i said, and as a proof, this is the reason i do not wish to have to even publish a paper on this.

You have an interesting point there. Just what if, i mean this is considering the posibilities, if our local monthman could have been an Aswang. considering if, just if, like i learn so far, that the Aswang is a form of a sickness, something like a vampire, considering vampires exist, then it would mean that an immigrant from Asia was afflicted being an Aswang and appeared in as what we now call Mothman.

most of the times, the Aswang story has been attributed to abortion or infant fatality or even murder. I got that impression when i visited a province named SUIQIJOR, i might have miss spelled that. I wonder if there were reports of missing children or a rise of fatalities during the mothman sightings...

-that is very interesting. a big "what if".
-thank you. i should check this out once i settle back in Roanoke.

You are absolutely right. i edited it as it should be, thank you.

You have my admiration and full support in your diligence in upholding and promoting the proper usage of English grammar and literature. And by the way, your idea about the 'impending death of the English language" was a great hit in the university, thank you for that.

Good read, im philipino myself, i was born in manila. ive personally never experienced anything related to aswangs, maybe it was because i was fairly young and was always safe and sound in my house. I lived in the city, not the province and we never realy use to go out at night unless we were with our parents or family because it was too dangerous. nothing to do with aswangs, just normal rapists and kidnappers. i might be exagerrating a bit but it realy isnt a good idea to go out at night there unless your in a very buisy area.

Like i said ive never had any aswang experiences but i definetly believe in them. my dad and lots of other people i know have had plenty of experiences with aswangs and the paranormal in the past.

It might sound like b******s but a very close family friend of my grandmother was thought be be an Aswang himself! My dad was a kid at the time and lots of people in the village use to say that he(the family friend "pilo") was an aswang. Ive posted some of the stories in this forum, you could try and search for them if you want.

but i dont think the Aswang is a cryptid like bigfoot or nessie, i think its very much related to the Supernatural, I personally believe they are demon possessed people but in a much much much worse state.

Im not a Philipino, or Pinoy as my students refer themselves too, but i do love your people's culture and hospitality, the food, and how cheap it is there.

i was in a province in Cebu, Bato was the name of the area, i think the name means "rock" in english. I was researching there for 3 days inverviewing locals about the topic. so far what i found it is that the people who was thought to be as an Aswang or whichever was only "SOCIAL ACCUSATION" for being queer or strange, non comformist. and yes religion plays a big role in this too. But there are other stories that are very disturbing and gruesome and with questionable evidence. Its not easy to be a foreigner in an area that very few people could speak medeocre english, i brought with me 2 of my students from P.U.P. You might know that university.

But thank you for your insight.

Well im also from Philippines and i was born in the city. Personally i never had an experience about it. But most of the people and elders from provinces that i met was telling me same stories about those creepy entities. Some are saying that aswang can be a shapeshifter from a human to cat, bird(TIKTIK), dog, snake etc. Some are saying they are just like us but they act differently they don't socialize so much and once they spotted a funeral, they don't blink their eyes, they just keep staring all day long untill they could sneak the dead body and suck their blood or steal their body organs devil.gif .

1. the name is an AKA. it's a contradiction to the persona. youd think i'd use this name in the real world?
2.you have a poor grasp of english for a american- that should be "an" and not a -(a american). if you found things that i need to edit pls say so that i could revise what needs revising.
3. its balony if you dont have a carreer to take care of or you work as a profesional critic. trust me, once you are a profesional you'd know
4. you have all the right to think that way. like i said, and as a proof, this is the reason i do not wish to have to even publish a paper on this.

1./ A mature "American" university teacher would choose something more intellectual than that,
2./If your a american why do you need other people to tell you how to fix your error's? you should know this already
3./I might still be young be i dare say that im more profesional than you for instance i don't make up false stories to get attention on the internet
4./I am asian i know about the Aswang myth if you had all the equipment that you claim laptops, ect you should have proof
