did you report it to the authorities?

they laughed. which is the response they should have to this foolishness. Conducting state business on an unencrypted, public, webmail account. Sheesh.

bathory, you realize I could hack any yahoo account in three minutes if I know the person? I'd be willing to bet millions of yahoo accounts are hacked everyday. You really think the authorities have time to track down IP addresses?

So what?

If I broke into someones home and stole their TV, odds are the cops wouldn't do anything other than take down a statement for the owners insurance purposes.
They aren't going to assign a team of detectives to the case, unfortunately they have limited resources.

It doesn't make it any less illegal.

The fact that this is incredibly high profile means that the authorities are more likely to treat it seriously...

An update:

From Information Week:

Quote

A federal grand jury convened in Chattanooga, Tenn., to hear evidence in the alleged hacking of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Mail account ended its session on Tuesday without an indictment against University of Tennessee study David Kernell.

I agree.  As a government official her emails should be subject to scrutiny if she was conducting government business.  Who in their right mind would use Yahoo to conduct government business?  It is irony that the government is upset that a person tapped into an officials email but at the same time monitor the peoples phone and emails without a warrant.  Both are wrong!
