Likely he is the guy that wants to Kill Jacob in the final episode. My hunch is that the guy in the black can take the form of anything that dies on the island or any dead body on the island. So he takes the body of Jacks dad and leads him to do things. You also have to remember that Christian is also responsible for Locke which allowed Locke to die in the first place. In my eyes the smoke monster is a form of judgement and if you fail you go to Hell. The fact that Richard Alpert and Ben don't know what the smoke monster is leads me to believe that smoke monster is evil and could be a manifestation of the man in Black.

I think that the what we will see is that the island is all about the battle of Good versus Evil and if the inhabitants of the island can truelly be one or the other. It seems at times all the people on the island do good things and bad things. Ultimately I think the goal is to get the people to either choose a path of good or a path of evil and stick to it.

I agree with paragraph one. The man in dark is the Smoke Monster, and all the dead manifestations are him as well, including "risen" Locke and Christian Shepherd. However I don't agree that the conflict is as simple as good verses evil. I believe that the supernatural forces at work on the island are the "Egyptian" gods. As I said in another thread, the Island isn't based upon Egyptian mythology, but that Egyptian mythology is based upon Island mythology. What I'm saying is, the Island came first. The portal off the Island leads right into Africa, right next to Egypt. I would assume sometime several thousand years ago a group of the Others left the Island for some reason or another and founded the Egyptian empire. The Egyptian mythology was based upon what they remembered of the Island.

The whole show is deep. The writers haven't strayed away from deep plots for fear of losing the audience yet so I see no reason why they'd start now.

I just watched all 5 seasons back to back no commercials. Let me tell you, that was a ride.

I do not think that Christian or the man in black are the smoke monster. The smoke monster is a little bit more animalistic than either. I don't think it would chase the losties one second and then guide them to help another. Which is what Christian first did, guide Jack to water. I think that the smoke monster is the slave of the man in black. I do not think that Christian is the man in black because the man in black is busy being Locke and Christian is with Claire.
