  • Scientists get funky about having their research poached

Posted 01 July 2009 - 08:51 PM

I am having a very geeky afternoon, and thought that perhaps this site should have a thread for Tolkien fans. So if you enjoyed any of his many novels come on and express the love! If you want to talk about the movies based on his books, be ready for revenge of the nerds (most likely).

Who is your favorite character of the novels? Any particular chapter(s) you favored? Thought his discriptions of nature were very colourful? That he was brilliant?

Incidently, I used the search button and didn't come up with anything, so if there is a very old thread dedicated to Tolkien, you can direct me there.

How do the books and the film differ? I haven't read the books (yet) and I'm curious.

I think my jaw made a crack in the floor as they connected happy.gif

I know it's a cop-out, as they say, but I have 5 minuets before I have to be out the door. There is a fabulous site that lists all the differences, though it's a little 'nit-picky', as it has no intention of denying. There are a lot of very large things that they changed. The thing that drives me the craziest is sending the elves to Helm's Deep... there was a good reason they weren't there! (fighting orcs back at Dol Goldur maybe...?!)

It's a lot of reading, and if you haven't read the books, probably not as funny. I get a chuckle reading some of the changes.

I read the books all the way through before I saw the movies.

And up until like grade 10, I made a point of reading them once a year.

Also, in Hindsight, I think I like the way they handled Aragon better in the movies then in the books.

He became a different character in the movies, really. But it's because of what they did with Arwen (puke) and his interactions with her, plus Viggo is an amazing actor, I'll give him that! I've always loved his work. In fact, much of the casting of the film was good. Just not the content...

I haven't watched the movies yet. For some reason anytime I get into watching Fellowship, something winds up stopping me at the EXACT SAME SPOT every time (when Gandalf is going to see Saruman, in the beginning). Dunno what it is, but just can't get through it...

Started reading the books, and I love them. Love his writing style, it's so fun despite the seriousness of the plot. I love reading stuff like that, it never fails to put a smile on your face.

But that's all I have to add. D:
