Hello, sorry if this has been posted before, i did look and couldnt find it.

Over the last few months i keep being awoken with what seems like a loud banging noise on my front door. I swear someone has ran up to my door and just started pounding on it. It scares the living crap out of me, however when i awake i know that its from the final remanants of my dream. This doesn't happen every night but it does happen quite often.

To save someone the trouble of saying "see a doctor" (As if their prescription pad holds the answer to every problem) i've alread been there and done that. I've been to see a few of them and all i ever get is total bemusement along with a prescription for Xanax or Ambien depsite the fact i've told them i'm a single dad with a 2 year old at home so sleep meds are out of the question. If anyone else has experienced this terrifying phenomona and can shed some light on how to fix the problem or what might be causing it, i would be very grateful.

Thanks
Im a proud father to my beautiful little son Aodhan

It's just banging that you realize is part of your dream fragments, but it's terrifying?

Check out the Sleep Paralysis link in my signature, read up on it and Hypno- gogic and pompic hallucinations. Bangs, voices, music, whispers, footsteps, doors opening/unlocking etc are all common audial components, with sensing malevolent presences and seeing figures is the more common visual aspect - Old Hag/Chest Crushing syndrome and even Succubus reports may all be related to these odd states which may last up to 15 minutes, even if you wake up and go fix a sandwich. They are entirely natural psychological REM-related anomolies which seem to just occur, usually moreso in stressed people, and there is some slight indication the condition may be inheritable.

As for what you can actually do about it, I'm not sure. There are communities set up of fellow sufferers, and there is also "awake while asleep", as a very related, and they also have communities set up.

If you tried or don't like sleep aids, my recommendation would be to practice some minor self hypnosis and relaxation exercises maybe even some creative visualizations.

I sure do appreciate the reply. I would of course look for rational explanations first and whilst i do believe in the paranormal, i dont believe every experience i have is paranormal. Very kind of you to take the time to write this.

Its terrifying for just a few minutes, even though i realise its in my dream.

I sometimes hear people talking for a second when I wake up, even when theres nobody home. And sometimes the sounds that you describe. And sometimes I even see stuff but all this doesnt worry me so much. It's probably due to some circumstances in my life, oh well... :P

Hope this helps.

My first question is if the banging you hear is accompanied with a bad night's sleep? Restless thoughts before finally falling asleep or something of that nature?

My second question is if you are going through any spiritual crisis or other situation which has persisted for quite some time?

Wow. I have been going through a spiritual crisis. My fiance died very suddenly about a year and a half ago, to spare you the details i walked in and found her dead. Since then i have felt like i am being haunted, im sure a lot of it is my imagination but when im alone at night i feel like there is a strong presence in my home, im afraid im going crazy. Her death was vey traumatic to me so yes i have had a spiritual crisis of sorts.

Sorry for your loss and I hope that you are able to let go of any negative feelings including guilt in time. This might very well be a spiritual attack and the knocking is taunting. My suggestion is if you are religious or a spiritual person to talk to someone you trust that deals in such matters. If not maybe therapy? I know you have tried meds but talking through our issues can tremendously help.

The reason I asked is because last year I went through a very similar episode and heard the knocking. I believe it had much more to do with my own inner turmoil than anything else. At the time I was also going through terrible thought loops, the same thoughts running over and over in my head, I had to tell myself that it is OK to think whatever I was thinking for a while but I did not have to let it control me all night.

Try shaking some salt across your front doorstep. (Sometimes conscious action creates a subconscious response which may solve a problem created by your subconscious.)

Lots of modern people poo poo this idea, but it has always been very effective as a ritualised response, in societies where "illnesses of the mind" do not have the advantage of modern medical and psychological knowledge.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world..

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

As another thought.
it is a belief that when a spirit is trying to contact you, you will often wake up suddenly throught the night. Try spending 15 minutes a day at the same time everyday meditating. This should help communications improve.

It is only sometimes...which means its a dream..As suggested its just the lack of sleep...or that your mind is trained to hear it

Thanks for all the responses, i do appreciate it. When i say sometimes, it happens often enough for it to bother me. I have very vivid dreams that are always of dead loved ones, i believe some of what i am experiencing is Post Traumatic SD so some of this is normal.

Just as a follow up to this thread. I know wake up almost every night at either 1.15, 2.15 or 3.15. Its freaking me out so much im refusing to look at my phone now when i wake up. My son woke up the other night after what i think was a nightmare and its was 3.15. I then went back to sleep and had a vivid dream that a negative energy was in my sons room. I think the dream is perfectly rational but the awakening times are a little stranger. Anyone experience something similar?

It's not the event that is the problem, it's the effect of the vent is having on the OP which is the problem.

Sounds like you are suffering from stress, I have quite similar experiences when I'm very stressed, maybe Xanax would be a good idea, it's hardly what some people make it out to be, it's synthetic tranquility (until you become immune to the effects), anyway in my experiences doctors are very wary of prescribing these kind of drugs for more than two weeks because of their addictive nature. If you take them sensibly they can be very helpful, they aren't going to put you into a sleep any deeper than good, natural sleep and are a good alternative if you can't get this naturally, it's not a sleep med, it's an anti-anxiety medication and what you are describing sounds like it could very well be the result of an underlying anxiety issue.

Although it's your choice in the end, I'm just trying to give you the perspective of someone who has had positive results from these meds as you tend to hear a lot of the train wreck tales when people talk about them.

I get this occasionaly. I think when you are asleep sounds seem much louder than they actually are so that you wake up, especially when your stressed, any tiny sound wakes me up pretty much instantly since I sleep very lightly (sometimes even with my eyes slightly open). It's an old natural defence to stop stuff sneaking up on you in the night.
