Somehow, counting recent movies, Knowing managed to **** with my brain.

Yeah, really scary, monsters jumping out at you from the dark. So scary.

About as scary as someone sneaking up behind you going boo. That's it.

Play Silent Hill if you want real mind raping psychological freakishness, not cheap surprises.

Well, if you want to be mind-raped, check out "Martyrs"... That movie is depressing as heck and disturbing beyond measure. I wouldn't call it "Scary", but it does leave a disturbing residue in your brain for days after seeing it...

Maybe the original Halloween? The Innocents? The original Nosferatu has it's eerie moments. I always thought that blood-test scene in 'The Thing' was quite disturbing.

Can't think of many truly scary movies, though.
I love you, Dr Johnson, and I want to have your babies...

The Changeling. (George C Scott not Angie)

This is my all time favorite ghost movie too.. everything in it is just perfect. When ghost movies were about ghosts and not about ghosts killing everyone in the house in some bloody bizarre way while.

I only wish they start making movies like this again.

3. Quarantine
4. Night of the Living Dead (remake)
5. Nightmare on Elm Street (original)

Aww no, the original of Quarantine is much scarier.

[REC]. Watch it.

You mean [rec] - and to a certain extent I agree... On the other hand, I despise having to read a movie (I like reading, but I watch movies - especially horror movies - to be able to concentrate on the movie part - not the subtitles).

So while "[rec]" is probably a great movie, I dislike it...

One movie that scares the hell out of me - The grugde 2 (the japanese-version).

There is a movie-series I would never watch - Saw 1-6. Just looking at the pictures and having my friends telling me about them, scares me.

Quatermass & the pit

oh & the second exorcist film. Not the crappy one with James Earl Jones, but the one with George c Scott.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
is a doctrine fostered by a dillusional,
illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly
promoted by an unscrupulous main stream
media which holds forth the proposition
that it is entirely possible to pick up
a turd by the clean end.

Most movies just aren't that scary. However, if I had to pick five......

1. The Exorcist

2. Kids

3. Requiem for a Dream

4. The Hills Have Eyes

5. The Thing

By the way, Silent Hill was pretty eerie. There were some freaky parts in Doom 3 as well.

This thread points to an interesting question... What constitutes a scary movie? Is it the creeping tension? Or is it a set of jump scares? Or is it gore?

For example, some people claim "Quarantine" was scary. While I found the movie entertaining, it doesn't meet the "Scary" moniker for me - as soon as I left the theater I was no longer haunted by it. "The Shining" left me with images that send chills down my spine even now... And "The Blair Witch Project" was a movie I didn't think was scary at all... until the lights were out and I started hearing noises in the dark.

All three were scary in their own right - we need more gradations of the word "Scary".
