I have only been to La Rundel once and I think it was maybe a couple of months ago with a group of friends at night.

Like people have said it is super run down and pretty dangerous, my friends and I had a thorough look through the main? building - the larger one, as well as the smaller one closer to the fence, we were there on a weeknight and while there were some signs up about tresspassing but there was no security patrolling the area. My friends had been there before and had told me about the 'music box' music at midnight but we weren't able to hear it on this night from the smaller building we were in.

Nothing particularly scary happened that night except for when we were leaving the large building, we had been in there for more than an hour having a really good look through all the rooms so we knew we we're the only people there that night, and it was a completely still night with no wind. We left the building the same way we had come in and as we were about to head down the staircase we had heard a huge crashing of something either falling or a door being slammed right behind us. Safe to say we crapped ourselves and left the building as fast as we could. We stood outside for maybe five minutes and tried to figure out what the hell it was. We finally decided to go back up and check to see what it was to put our minds at ease and I couldn't find ANYTHING to explain what it was. The door to the staircase was gone, all of the doors inside were open and there was nothing on the floor that would have been loud enough to make that sound when it fell!

Well I hope my experience was interesting to read! I'm currently in the Phillipines and my dad was just telling me some of his experiences with ghosts and filipino folklore, which some of the filipinos very much believe. And I shared this story with him which sparked my interest in La Rundel since I really didn't know much about it!

Speaking of RMIT, anyone know or experience anything at the Sunbury campus? That place has also got an interesting history is funnily enough on hill too. I went there one night with my mate, and in one of the old dorm buildings, i could see mattresses still stacked along the wall. The old laundry building was pretty damn creepy too. Hell, the whole place is freaking creepy to me. Love to hear any stories about that place.

this has been a really interesting read thankyou!
my dad was a resident of La Rundal for 9 years, i have heard some amazing stories (and horrific)from him,  but in seeing all these recent pictures i am absolutely devistated that people have vandalised something so amazing that holds some profound memories, i have been to La Rundal, when i was 8 years old, and i do remember the buildings, and the people that were housed within its walls, i still remember the smell and the sounds that were around me, i would love to go back and see it, does anyone have any pictures of the facility from when it was operational or before it was totally wrecked by vandals? i would love to see them, my father passed away in febuary this year, and as weird as it sounds my most fond memories of him is sitting with him in a little green shadehouse/gazebo eating icypoles while i had my visits, really glad i found this thread!!!

I am a psych graduate and have a particular interest in the histories of Australian asylums, most notably Larundel (since I live in Melbourne).  I am just wondering if you would be able to share any of your Dad's stories with me?  I will keep them completely confidential.

On the topic of the "music box", apparently that was a recording that La Trobe university used to play over their speaker system at night, to scare people away.  Understandable they didn't want junkies/dealers/vandals/etc hanging around so close to their campus.

i went to la rundel a couple of months ago with a few mates. It was a sunday night around 7 30 - 8 o'clock in the last light of the day. One mate waited with the car while me and another checked out a couple of the smaller buildings, just before we left we went up stairs in the main building. Until we entered the main building we could hear the sounds of the wildlife and cars (the general outdoors sounds) but inside the upstairs hallway it was dead silent. My friend and i both noted the eery silence as well as the dead cold that we felt around us as well as the soft wind that was beginning to move towards us from down the hall. We got pretty freaked out and walked onto the outside belcony area where the warmth of the day returned to us as well as the regular sounds of the birds and wat not. I pulled out my fone and started to film just on the off chance that we came in contact with something. We walked into the hallway and saw nothing interesting, however it was still freezing in the hall, (the weather was 30 degrees that day and it was still quite hot outside) and we headed home. Later that night i watched the video and noticed that there is what looks like a woman in a blue dress standing in the shadows in the hallway staring at us, i showed it to alot of my friends and many people get really freaked out by it and think its a ghost, however it could just be light reflecting off a wall to create an illusion or something. However the video is VERY ameteur and dark so it could be anything, but ill upload the video in the next couple of days once i put it on my computer and you guys can make your own decisions.

Interesting that you experienced the dead silence in there , people claim door bang and things rattle , but it's always been dead quiet when I've been in there , even on a windy day.
There is a dayroom on the lower floor where all the sounds from outside were excluded and my ears were ringing loudly in the cold silence.

I am so sorry for not answering a Hell of a lot earlier, but I have only just remembered this forum as a Member has contacted me for addiional information.

There were children there during WW2 when the hospital was just built but was not open to patient's only Army Families.
Whole families lived there.

This is the only time that children, not babies, were actually at Larundal.

This would also fit the time frame for the Music Box, as many of these were used as toys and amusement back in the early 1940's.

Babies not children were admitted along with their mothers in the Prof Unit upstairs in the huge front building.

Hi people!! I am a newbie here, i am amazed by how many people r interested in larundel!! I am also a local around the area and am very farmliar about larundel. Have many freaky experience and encounting that cant not be explained!! The little white house ur left as u drive down towards the main building, we went there serveral years back went with least 15 people during summer about 11,50 kicked yhe main door down n as we entered there was a lound thumb coming from the stairs, as we walked down the hall way i notice it got pretty cold and i grab a vedio camera from my mate. Wen i turn the camera on into night version, **** me it was like we were in their world!!! Seeing te night from their own eyes, i could see fog breathing from my breath from the video camera footage, anyway as we headed up the stairs i stoped and felt loke a warning not to go futher and out of the blue heard loud thumb on the top floor n foot walks!  so we ran out of thr house .

I went to la rundel with a few friends very recently, it is now turned into a housing construction site and I assume they are set to be demolished. Anyway, the buildings are trashed, we arrived after 12am so did not hear any music.

The buildings have had most of their windows smashed, abundant graffiti inside, holes in walls, generally like another abandoned building I have been in minus the heroin needles. Someone had set fire to one of the small buildings as well as their being another fire which only burnt a small section of another. It wasn't really scary at all. Needless to say apparently a security guard turned up and we got out of there. Conveniently sirens started around the time we were going to jump the fence, luckily it was just a fire engine.

In all, nothing out of the ordinary was experienced. If anything the ghosts have probably been scared away by the crazed youths who ravaged the buildings.

I'm sorry to sound negative or like a troll but cpjason, that's clearly the ghost of a giant St. Bernard?. Why would that  be in the hospital, and how did it get to be that size?. Lol

Totally fake.  The lighting on the figure is completely off from the rest of the picture and its pixellated when the rest of the photo isn't.
