Torrent sites are cheating companies out of a lot of money... but I still consider them an important internet function that shouldn't be tampered with.

To be honest I think these big tv/music/video companies really bring this on themselves, If alot of them didn't charge such ridiculous prices they probably wouldn't be in this situation.

I've never used the pirate bay before but I have alot of respect for those two.

Not sure how you can charge somebody with anything if they are not in the country...that's a bit weird.

All hate for the media companies aside...it is stealing.

So you would be OK with everyone here coming to your work and stealing everything that you have done in order to provide for a living for yourself and your family? I think cars have ridiculous prices; it doesn't mean I can just go and take one...

I can see your point with that and no I wouldn't be all that happy with it.
I don't like the idea of stealing from the authors (I still buy my CDS, MP3s DVDs etc) and I don't condone stealing as such, but I can see where the alure to download items from these sites comes from.

I just feel that if alot of the media wasn't being retailed at such high prices then the problem with torrents and file sharing programs might not be so bad.

To be fair, those guys, out of all the torrent sites and their creators, were always going down. Other sites hid behind the feeble defence that their sites were only meant to be used for legal file sharing (certain Artist and even the BBC have created torrents for free distribution), but TPB used to boast about having the latest pirated movie (I think they even renamed the site to something like 'The Dark Bay' when The Dark Knight was first leaked); basically a big virtual middle finger to the film industry.

This subject will always be in the middle of a debate but lets consider what will happen to sites like the pirate bay and music, movies, games and software.

The authorities can try and stop these sites till kingdom come they can add hundreds of new laws and try to enforce them but one thing that is a huge undeniable fact is that they can never ever stop these sites.

Why?

its simple for every smart nerd there is a even smarter nerd. for every white hat there's a better black hat and the other way around.

Some of these industry's have got the message and have already began to evolve games for instance.

Allot of them have started adding digital downloads as an option aside from a hard copy effectively giving them some of the lost income from pirating.

Same goes for music allot of artists have gotten the hint and started selling there music as digital downloads.

The ones that seem to struggle the most is movies and software less then 2 days after windows 7 launched there was already a working pirated version on TPB.

Microsoft has put no Genuine software detection in windows 7 so far that can detect these pirated win7.

Movies still rake in billions at the box office and have bin reluctant to start a plan they set forth over 4 years ago to offer a digital download of a movie as it launches at the box office.

As long as they still rake in billions they will not change a thing about how they launch and if pirating gets worse will take the brunt of the tsunami of torrents.
