ok tonight when i was laying in bed with my eyes closed thinking, out of nowhere my body, or soul to say better felt like it was falling. Suddenly i sat up not able to fall asleep. i know its not a dreem cause im not yet alseep, and i know im not actually falling. Some say i havent grounded my self but i wanted to see other peoples thoughts on what this is, and i would like to know if there is a way to fix it.

Your blood pressure and/or heart rate dropped too quickly for your body's liking so your heart jolted the system just in case it was a lethal thing.
Same as when you dream of falling and suddenly lurch awake - blood pressure and/or heart rate dropped too quickly.

It is a hynogogic illusion, brought on by your desire-conscious,or sub-conscious-to stay awake. Some part of you resists sleep...whether because you: fear dieing, fear having nightmares, don't want to miss out on the fun you could be having if awake, or whatever. Truly accept sleep-as something safe, and desireable-and then go to bed at a reasonable time. The problem should cease. If need be, play some baroque classical music, at low volume, to help you relax.

You will probably find you were actually asleep if only in a very light sleep almost like a deep meditative state basically the start of REM sleep. I would say a noise or something moving near by has alerted your mind and your mind has quickly brought you out of the sleep stage as a defence mechanism.
I guess the heartrate/BP explanation is a much more scientific explanation and I like that. Wouldn't mind hearing more of why this happens Wearer of Hats.

By what the thread starter posted it did not read out that they jerked awake... They did however say that they "sat up" because of the feeling of falling backwards.
As for your feeling of falling backwards there are no worries, I've done it many times while going to sleep, even meditating, except with meditating I thought I was floating, only to open my eyes and see that I'm dreaming, or something else (clouds, and castles on clouds)... When I forced myself awake I didnt even have to move, I was not leaned over, and my neck was not down, I was sitting the exact same way, except I had to force myself out of that conciousness...
If you can remember that your falling while going to sleep, you can actualy wake up while lucid dreaming instead of needing a catilyst to start the lucid dream.
