A man was beaten to death by a gang of thugs after confronting a thief who stole his girlfriend's Halloween hat.

Ben Gardner, 30, suffered fatal head injuries after he was punched and kicked to the ground in Sutton, south London, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The former bank worker was returning from a Halloween night out with his girlfriend, who was wearing a black fancy dress witch's hat.

As the couple walked down Throwley Way, one member of a drunken group of men and women grabbed the hat and walked off.

It is believed that when Mr Gardner asked for it back, the thief spat in it before handing it over.

At this point several other members of the group attacked Mr Gardner, leaving him unconscious in the street with fatal injuries.

I'm fairly non-violent myself, so will never understand the thinking process that leads to stealing a hat and beating a man to death with a group of friends when he asks for it.
