Imagine driving at top speed on a steep, winding mountain pass in the Alps, the Himalayas or the Rocky mountains.

Now, take your hands off the steering wheel and cover your eyes. Or grab a camera and take some pictures of the snowy mountain peaks. Or send a text message to a friend describing the scenery.

You would skid off the road and plunge into a deep ravine within seconds, right?

But not if a group of graduate students at Stanford University could programme the car to drive itself.

The mechanical engineering students are creating an autonomous - or driverless - car that they plan to race up and down the treacherous Pikes Peak highway in the Rocky mountains next year.

They are doing goob but I think its not a practical thing to do...Because a car would need to go almost anywhere and it is not practical that these students design this thing up and making it capable of going anywhere without a driver but we have certainly so advantages also

Thanks

The day when vehicles are autonomous like minority report, is the day when driving becomes safer. Every car should have an on board computer that has the ability to drive the car automatically to it's destination, and is mindful of the other vehicles around it. There would be no accidents or traffic jams if every single car on the road/highway communicated with each other automatically. The technology for this need's some work, and our GPS system would need to be improved, but in my opinion it would greatly benefit us. There's too much human error, let the computer take over......skynet comes to mind....lol

they had better make sure they dont screw it up and the car drives off a cliff on the way up... can you say $200,000 worth of car smashed to pieces? that might make their sponsors think twice about funding this sort of thing
