Fenrir notices his current mission's objective enter the building, and he quickly casts a wary eye around the room again.

"I would certainly think he believed the tale, but who knows?" He had caught a glimpse of her eyes shifting colors, and his suspicions were now confirmed. He turns away for a moment, gazing into the fireplace that warmed the area around the table they sat at. "Yes, all rumors and superstitions start somewhere. The question is.. where?"

He turns his attention to the two men who have arrived from the cold, rainy night. He gestures towards the table he and Rosemerta sit at. "You must be cold, my friends. It's a harsh night out, after all. Please, join us and warm yourselves by the fire. You both look like you could use some warmth and a strong drink."

He replied curtly, and seemed to be avoiding a straight answer, but that was the least of Rosemerta's concern when she noticed that he too had caught sight of the two strange guests. The cloaked one appeared withdrawn and uncertain of his surroundings, he displayed all the characteristics of one of them. His feet were visibly bare and stained with mud, clearly no sense of how to blend in, probably because he didn't remember how to.

Rosemerta peered down at her watch once more--becoming concerned, an hour had well past, he was late.

Just then there was a tap on her shoulder, she glanced up to see a man of his forties she recognized immediately, he wore an old suit and thick glasses.
"I can't stay Rosemerta, here is your next assignment" He said in a hushed voice handing her an envelope. "Who is your friend?"
"No idea" she admitted.
"Caution" He told her gazing at the man suspiciously.
"I know the drill Henry, I'll be sure to watch my back" she replied watching the acquaintance as Henry quickly dashed off.

It appeared he hadn't noticed, instead he was gesturing to the two figures, inviting them to sit at their table.

Flames danced and licked from the hearth in time with the Welsh band who began playing. Footsteps sounded on the wooden floor as the local men and women formed a circle and begin stepping in and out then moving the circle clockwise before beginning all over again amid high laughter. Their hands held for a moment then dropped as they moved in and out, out and in, running around a circle, then doing it all over again.

Chants followed by singing and claps forced Emyrwyn to speak up as he ordered one, two, then three and four drinks as he saw two persons sitting at a table with one inviting them over. It was to his advantage and fate that he was able to walk so easily into the village and was now going to blend in among locals he thought as he turned away from them.

"And one each of whatever they are having mate and eh, by the way, any rooms for the night could use a shower?"

A hard eye and raised brow over the other wide open eye by the 'tender was followed quickly by Emyrwyn discreetly producing a few large denomination bills.

"Just the floods. Need to get back to family on foot see..."

The 'tender nodded and already had the drinks on a platter on the counter then placed a key that said 101 on it. Turning with drinks held carefully with both hands Emyrwyn then presented the other three the drinks thanking Israel with a half nod before making proper introductions of himself telling them his name as well as repeating the same story about trying to get home and having to abandon his vehicle a few villages back.

He looked more a mess in proper lighting as his dirty fingernails reached into his week's growth of beard stubble. Wearing a dark navy pea coat jacket of fine wool over a white oxford shirt and dark trousers his story had no reason to be doubted. His boots though looked mismatched but were a good choice in this weather. They looked badly in need of repair as much as everything else did mending. It had been a rough two weeks on the road in search of The Old Man of Chepstow but now he was here with drink in hand among the locals.

Long post is kind of long and I am sorry. :(

~~~~~~~~~~
Israel didn’t know about how much he needed warmth or a drink, but he knew they weren’t options he could pass up. Struggling to keep his composure after seeing Emyrwyn accept the invitation, Israel found himself at odds with the decision to flee. He could run now, but with limited spaces to hide, he would be too easily cornered if anyone decided to give chase. Or, he could stay, and relinquish himself to the subjugations of the public…
Indecision left Israel standing alone on the floor after Emyrwyn had gone to sit at the table. Realizing this, he chose to approach them, and slowly began to lower the cover from his head. Israel was reluctant; he did not seek attention or exposure, and desperately wished to melt into the shadows instead. But, upon reaching the chair that had been marked as his, he let the hood slide down and rest against his back once more.
His hair was white and short, stopping abruptly above a strong, prominent brow. His face, pale though it was, did not have a healthy pigment. He looked as if he had been caught in a snow storm, or perhaps as if he had been beaten but only lightly bruised. When Israel reached out to pull his chair away from the table, his hands seemed similar in hue—though somewhat bluer, and considerably bony. He did not seem to notice.
Looking downward, desperately seeking some place for his eyes to linger, Israel offered a weak and confused smile. He willed his lips to turn up, though he could not feel or direct his face to do so properly, and finally managed a very crooked, very inappropriate grin. Hesitantly he slipped into the chair, already feeling a sense of dread creep over him. This was not the place for him, he told himself, there were too many eyes…
Then, Emyrwyn’s nod was acknowledged with a quick wave, and Israel eyed the drink before him. He didn’t know what it was, but finding himself unable to refuse Emyrwyn’s generosity, Israel feigned a small sip. The stranger’s story, too, reminded Israel that he did not have a tale of his own, and he immediately set to conjuring one—simply because he could not remember the one that belonged to him.
He hoped he would not be asked his reason for being, though it seemed the question would be inevitable—but finally, when nothing seemed to come to him, he decided to worry about it when the time came.
“Your hospitality… is appreciated,” he muttered, “but it is too much. You will have to forgive me; I am a very simple man. I am… unused to such luxuries as alcohol.” He struggled with his language, already aware that his word choice was inappropriate. Though he had believed he was well versed in acting, Israel now realized he had completely and utterly failed. But, once again, he presented a feeble smile out of shame, and did not look up from the edge of the table.
(Well my next post is kinda lazy...I'm sorry too, not feeling the greatest today, just keeping the character up with events... :hmm: )
She didn't particularly notice the band playing in the background, nor did it gain her attention that the tavern was busier and more alive with humans and their quarrels either. The air smelt of smoke and booze, and the two strange guests seemed to have accepted the offer. He, the grubby one didn't look as out of place as he may have felt, it was obvious to her that he felt he must keep any unwanted attention off himself, and he'd been presented with the perfect opportunity to do so.
However, it was the one in the cloak people noticed, as he reluctantly made his way over to her table as his companion set down drinks.
People watched and whispered under their breath as he set himself down smiling weakly and slowly lowering his hood to reveal a pale gaunt face, his eyes were set deep in their sockets, and Rosemerta resisted the urge to address him, it was not the right time.
No one would have guessed that Rosemerta could here all their voices, any of which she chose to tune into. The tavern's guests were all each on a different frequency that she could listen too even from the other side of the room, it was a skill that had come in handy, that was of coarse once she'd learned to master it. Before in the early days it had been a swarm of voices inundating through her ears making no coherent sense, driving her out of public places and into the confinements of where she lived.
"Look at him, he looks so pale, and he wears no shoes on such a cold evening" A deep husky male voice said, he looked down upon him, Rosemerta could tell that by the tone, someone well off, and judging others was routine for them.
With ease she tuned out their voices, needing her senses fully focused on their new guests. Keeping the envelope in her hand well hidden as she placed it under her leather jacket, she kindly excepted the drink offered to her. The human called himself Emyrwyn, not a name Rosemerta heard often.
Oh great, another human drink to scoff down, she thought to herself. Able to get a good look at Emyrwyn once he'd sat himself down she saw that if one would excuse the beard stubble and dowdy clothes there was a potentially handsome man. She wondered nonchalantly why or what had caused him to allow himself to get to such a state.
Emyrwyn began telling them of his travels for the past two weeks. Rosemerta offered appropriate nods to indicate she was listening, which was only half true. She subtlety kept her eyes on the hooded figure scrutinizing his movements, which only confirmed to her every second that she had guessed right what he was. Vaguely sniffing the air it became apparent he also had no human sent, smelling of elements of the earth, behind that aroma there was also the faint unmistakable smell of decay.
He spoke up and seemed desperate to use the right words as he thanked everyone, offering yet another weak smile and lowering his head almost shamefully.
"Oh, how rude of me, I have not yet introduced myself" She said thoughtfully to her acquaintance and the new guests "I am Rosemerta, nice to have some company on this lively evening" She raised her glass as a toast.
Raising his glass on high with his left arm fully extended upwards as Rosemerta offered a toast and without looking anywhere in particular except blindly down to the table Emyrwyn quickly downed the drink.
Suddenly a strange nervousness found his way into that first drink in between the ice cubes and no matter how far he looked into that glass it seemed like it would never end. Picking up the empty glass again with a bit of shake and a rattle he bit into an ice cube instead and resolved not to get another drink though his hand also shook with the dilemma of temptation to get wildly drunk.
This was a hit he wanted to finish as soon as he could and every clue would count especially from a place like this so there would be no time for diversion no matter how badly needed. Drink could wait but for some reason he felt this job was going to be different than the rest, everything was too smoothly falling in place, fate was opening doors it seemed leading him directly towards The Old Man of Chepstow.
So far he had found only one of the kind and for some reason Emyrwyn found it a great source of hidden amusement when the server arrived with four orders of fish and chips and began attempting to set a plate in front of Israel. Steam slowly floating upwards making Israel's grimaced face appear blurred to Emyrwyn who sat on the other side of the cart the server had brought with their order.
"My treat mates and if you do not eat it I just might," he quickly quipped while looking towards Rosemerta and Fenrir while the server continued setting down the rest of the fish dishes.
Digging into his food Emyrwyn began no time eating, perhaps a bit too fast, but he started to recount a tale with his mouth half full of chips, "On the other side of the bank when I came to and saw the bridge washed out I knew I would have to travel downstream until I found another bridge. When I was leaving a man was on the middle of the road and told me follow him down a path to a small boat. Somehow he knew I had intended to cross but as I followed we came over a small hill and at the bottom were many lights moving ever so slowly."
Pausing to ask for water he continued, "It was enough to give me a willy-nilly so I turned tail and ran until the next village past. Funny thing is on the way up to the tavern I saw lights again on the other side of the river but this time it looked like men with torches."
"There is more. When I entered that village downstream I saw no one in sight, no one outside anywhere, not a soul I could see except in one house where someone was looking at me from a window. As you can imagine I did not stay long and three hours later I find myself here among you fine gentleman and lady," he added while putting his hands together looking at Israel to his left then Fenrir to his right before smiling tersely at Rosemerta.
Fenrir stayed quiet through most of this, contemplating the situation. He was dining with a werewolf, a vampire, and.. something else; quite possibly another were or vamp. His objective, Israel, was sitting directly across from him, and yet he could not discuss anything with the man without the others hearing and becoming suspicious. He was now aware that Rosemerta was an agent of some kind... she had received orders from someone, and then that someone had also told her to be wary of Him. The fact that she had made no motion to conceal the words means that she had either not caught on that he was a were, and therefore had enhanced hearing... or she wanted him to hear what was going on. Both were equally unlikely.
Rosemerta had introduced herself, and Emyrwyn had, for some inexplicable reason, not only ordered them all drinks, but food as well.
("He's trying too hard. Attempting to earn our trust through sheer kindness. A tactic not unlike my own...") He muses, eyeing the fish and chips that were being set down.
("... At least he has good taste in food.") He thinks, slowly eating. ("Somehow... I have to uncover their motives.. Without revealing my own.")
There was very little he noticed, and among the noise and bright lights, Israel was lost. He had barely caught Rosemerta as she introduced herself. Instead, he found himself thinking deeply—something he did very little of. He asked himself concerning questions, and found that they troubled him more than was intended. Did they know what he was? Did they know who he was? How did they know? Was it common, was it obvious? What would they do to him? …Did it even matter?
He did not acknowledge Rosemerta’s introduction, nor did he seem to notice she offered a toast to the table. He sat in a stiff silence until a waitress arrived at the table, placing platters around the table. As she came to him, he held up a head in protest, and insisted that he did not want it. Regardless of his objection, the plate clattered down in front of him, but he quickly pushed it away with a threatening scowl.
Turning his head just slightly, he did, however, listen in to Emyrwyn’s story. He did not intend to catch every word, but he heard enough to form the assumption that Emyrwyn was a family man, who intended to share every blissful minute of his life in the company of others.
Though he had sat in uninterested silence for sometime, Israel finally lifted his eyes and asked Emyrwyn, in a slow, hoarse voice, “And where do you go from here?”
For whatever reason, he did not feel compelled to address the other two. Perhaps he was not as quick-witted or observant, but he could not place the reason for his discomfort.
Rosemerta smiled back at Emyrwyn as he too raised his glass hi in the air and then drinking it down. She replaced the glass back on the table with a small thud, there was no way she was drinking that down. This stranger may have been an innocent fellow caught up with three dangerous characters, but nevertheless, he had entered the tavern with a Vampire.
For some reason it did not surprise her that the tenders arrived placing food down before all of them. And she resisted the urge to laugh when the vampire screwed his face up in distaste and pushed the plate away as if he was almost offended. Instead, a small grin pried her lips apart and she cleared her throat to hide it.
One thing that did shine like a beacon to her among Emyrwyn telling them more of his travels and the Vampire seeming to ignore her and the acquaintance, was that the acquaintance hardly uttered a word. Quite strange for someone who had invited two guests to sit at their table as soon as they'd entered the tavern. There was no mistaking it, it was not an act of hospitality on his part, he wanted something from them.
Even though Rosemerta would not have liked to admit it, not just because she despised what she was but simply because something so evil, so destined to do bad things couldn't possibly offer anything of advantage without it a catch, regardless, she did have to admit there was a loophole. The wolf's senses, her heightened sense of smell, sight and esp did have it's advantages, when the occasion called for it.
This was one of those moments.
Her stomach rumbled at the sight of the food reminding her that she hadn't eaten at all since this morning. Though she would excuse the chips, the fish certainly did look and smell good, pity it had to be cooked, such lovely fresh flesh spoiled by the humans desire to burn everything, still it would do.
This is where her senses came in handy, because she could do three things at once, listen, observe, and concentrate on her objective. Now was the perfect opportunity while Emyrwyn told of his travels and the Vampire deliberately directed his attention away from her and the acquaintance, who, if he didn't have any idea what she was by now, then he was deliberately kidding himself. She didn't have much more time to brief herself of the assignment, she had to do it now.
With one quick slash of her sharp finger nail she slit an opening in the envelope, keeping it down on her lap hidden beneath the table and cloth. She reached in and produced papers attached to a photograph. Her heart's pace quickened with excitement as she quickly scanned the information and registered the figure in the picture. And she slowly she lifted her burning eyes from the envelope and landed them upon the Vampire-Israel.
And where do you go from here?
The question was asked of him mid bite into a slice of fish almost caught him off guard because it was not something he thought anyone would be interested in much less Israel who had barely spoke since he met him near the broken bridge.
"Swansea."
Another bite of bread and then reaching over across the table he swiped Rosemerta's drink and downed it without asking since she had not touched it. It was a good time to make a exit at least long enough to take a shower so he quickly excused himself.
Upstairs in his room he looked out the window and could see the town council had already sent men to begin repairing the bridge by dark with bright lamps. The view across the river was dark and those dancing lights kept tugging at his mind but he quickly dismissed the thought again as he closed the mini blinds.
Fenrir watches the man leave with mild relief, finally able to focus his attentions on his target... and the woman, the greatest threat in the situation. However, Israel looked to be on the point of starvation; and Fenrir did not expect he would be drinking anything the tavern had to offer anytime soon. He pulls a small flask with some bright red liquid from his jacket, setting it on the table in front of Israel.
"You should find that drink to be more to your tastes, my friend. It's still rather warm, and I had the flask specially engineered to keep its contents fresh."
He takes another bite of fish, ignoring the chips and whatever foul alchohol Emyrwyn had ordered for them. The vampire's reaction to being offered fresh blood would gauge his current bloodlust, and along with it; his threat level. No conversation could be had with an extremely thirsty vampire, so if Fenrir was to discuss his mission with Israel, his thirst would first need to be satisfied. He keeps the other eye on Rosemerta, fully aware that she knows what he is, and also that she knows he knows what she is. While generally two weres meeting would be a happy occassion, she had an odd look in her eye aimed at the vampire; and Fenrir could not quite tell what emotion was being expressed.
(sorry for these long posts LOL, if you find it too much or not making enough sense PM me and I'll have them removed.)
Emyrwyn seemed lost in the moment, oblivious of the company he kept, and possibly walking into his death if he wasn't careful. In fact if he had been spotted with the Vampire, it was quite possible that he was now in danger too. Oh great, Rosemerta pondered to herself, two eggs in one basket, I hate when I end up having to protect more then one.
It occurred to her to ask him directly how he had met the Vampire. But just as she was about to open her mouth, he quickly excused himself and left the table. She watched him until he disappeared up the stairs...making sure no one was flowing him...it seemed for now the coast was clear.
A flask was offered to Israel by the acquaintance, the all too familiar sent of fresh blood flared her nostrils, alarming her and the beast within. For some reason, he was testing Israel's thirst.
Unwillingly, she was then overcome the desire to seize Israel by the hem of his cloak and drag him out into the safety of the deserted woods and explain to him, that whether he like it or not, for whatever reason, he had been marked a target. Perhaps the term "guard dog" was a little undignified, but in all honesty, that's basically what she was. Israel had been marked her territory and she, the guard dog, had been placed upon it. Any trespasses-beware.
She seized her plate and downed the fish in almost one bite, tasting the cooked fish and spices placed upon it, which spoiled the flesh for her.
The tavern began to cave in around her, Israel obviously had know idea that a conflicting party wanted him destroyed, if he did, this was a risky step to take- too risky. Her heckles stood on edge, her senses turned up a notch seeking out all in the tavern for any possible threat. Voices echoed in hers ears, singing, laughter and debates from humans all across the room. Of them all, the acquaintance was the first to arouse a low guttural growl deep within her chest, to low for human ears to pick up, but she bet with all her senses he could hear it, and she wanted him to, so that he would know any actions he might choose to take against her objective would be subjected to her interference.
He knew, the acquaintance knew that she was something else, and now Rosemerta knew that they both had their eye on Israel. The question was, did their objectives conflict with each other?
the beast was rearing up inside her ready to take action. No not here, not here, she chanted to herself, get back you monster until I say it's the right time. But the intruder in her body fought to disobey her orders, as if it felt it knew best. Her body prickled and burned as her strength increased doubling to accommodate the wolf's strengths also. Her teeth hardened ready to develop into canines along with her nails which were ready to protrude into claws.
Not here she demanded. Steady.
"Yes do take a sip...Israel, I think you'll find you don't have to reserve your nature around us." And with that, Rosemerta raised a hand and placed it on the table, revealing the claws now protruding from her fingertips.
Things began to happen too quickly, and suddenly Israel became afraid that they would all go the wrong way. He had no plans, no blueprints, but he was determined to make the first move in the event one was needed. When Emyrwyn excused himself, Israel looked up in mild interest, and watched him disappear up the stairs and into the dimly lit corridor.
Brimming with curiosity, he barely noticed Fenrir place the flask in front of him. Unable to get a whiff of the contents, Israel brushed it off as another attempt to serve him liquor. Uninterested, he pushed the flask back and shook his head without a word. Even as Rosemerta urged him on, he seemed oblivious to their tactics. He waved it away, paying no attention to her hand. A sudden worry flitted through him, and he was too eager to leave the table.
Looking back to the top of the stairs that lead to the sleeping quarters, Israel made sure that no one was going up or down, or that Emyrwyn had stopped there to reconsider his exist. Scraping the chair hard against the floor, Israel stood.
“Excuse me,” he muttered, “the lavatory.”
Brusquely he walked around the table and headed toward a hallway off beside the bar, where a sign hung that said, “Toilets”. The staircase to the tavern’s guest rooms was nearby. A mother and child walked behind him, and using the diversion, Israel turned abruptly and ran up, following Emyrwyn’s footsteps.
He raised his hood again and slowed his steps, treading quietly on the soft, beige carpet. He did not know which room Emyrwyn had disappeared into, but he walked down the rows of doors, listening closely to the activities within…
Quinn breathed heavily as the band accepted a gracious applause; playing the violin to her was as breathtaking as a brisk morning run. She laid the violin on the stool, and grinned as she joined in with the clapping. Quin reached for the microphone, and waved for a moment of silence.
“We’ll return shortly, with our guest Julie Murphy.” She stood back and watched as the vocalists dispersed through the crowd, very eager herself to move about and find something to drink.
A few seats had been emptied near the bar, where a man and woman sat with platters of fish and chips. Smiling broadly, Quinn approached Rosemerta and Fenrir and offered a friendly wave. She enjoyed the company of out-of-towners, perhaps, more than she enjoyed the company of her own band mates—the thrill of a conversation with a stranger was what had drawn her into the traveling folk group to begin with.
“Nice evening,” she beamed, “mind if I take a seat?”
OOC: Making junk up about that Julie Murphy stuff. No idea if she's ever even been to Chepstow rofl.
The claws she displayed had been for her acquaintance, as a sort of warning.
It took every inch of control she could master to hold herself back from going after Israel, for now that would have to wait, she knew where to find him. The details supplied in her envelope had told of this.
She drew her hair back from her face, sweat was building up on her forehead and she had to make this quick. Her features were sharp and chiseled though her oval, pale, face softened this into a more feminine complexion. She wore no make-up, or fancy clothes, she was too busy to give in to caring for her appearance.
She took the small opportunity as Israel backed away from the table to talk to her acquaintance more fully.
"Who are you?" She demanded, "you know what he is, you know what I am, tell me your name"
A bouncy, friendly girl glided over to their table, asking if she could sit.
Rosemerta took one swift look at her, and allowed the canine to rise into eyes so they glowed amber, her own personal welcome for the woman to see. Unless of coarse she was blind, but her sweet eyes directed perfectly at them both suggested otherwise.
This was no time for new guests.
Rosemerta Laughed dangerously and said "I'd hate for another innocent victim, to be dragged into my world. Save yourself the trouble and find another table."
It was for the girls own good. And Rosemerta was ready to leave any minute if her acquaintance chose to accept the girls offer, which would mean he wasn't willing to share anything of anymore interest.
