<strong class='bbc'></strong>
The fourth cousin of famed aviator Amelia Earhart has claimed that there has been a massive coverup about what happened to her and that she actually died after being captured by the Japanese following the crash.

"Wally Earhart of Carson City, the fourth cousin of Amelia Earhart, says the U.S. government continues to perpetrate a “massive coverup” about her mysterious disappearance in the Pacific 72 years ago."

I'm sorry but this Japanese thing is far fetched. His excuses for the cover up are flimsy at best. I think the guy is just looking to get his 15 minutes during this resurgence of interest.

She probably flew through a Bermuda Triangle type area, and dissapeared.

If the Japanese had captured her, wouldn't they release that information after the war was over? I see no point in keeping it hidden.

Have a second look, or maybe it would be your first.

Google "George Bush Siapan Amelia Earhart" - there is some interesting reading to be had out there.

One thing is for sure, anyone that believes a military person's version of the events of the past are more times than not listening to lies. What makes the Saipan version of events interesting is that the information comes from many different sources, both civilian and military, and many things could probably be verified.

Fourth cousin... now there's an intimate relationship. Is the fact that this guy is a fourth cousin supposed to make his opinion more valid? His connection with Amelia is that they had a great, great grandparent in common. Unless you're into genealogy you probably don't even KNOW who your great grandparents were.

Amelia had picked an alternate land site in case her navigator was slightly off track and she missed the first island. There is mounting evidence that she proceeded with her plan and landed at her alternate destination (basically crash landing after running out of fuel). Now that it's possible to get DNA results the team who found the first artifacts are going back to search for more. If they find anything this time they won't handle it and they'll check for Amelia's DNA. If they find anything we'll know for sure what happened. That would be really interesting from a historical point of view but it would mean that Amelia died a prolonged, lonely death.

What motive would the U.S. government have to cover this up? The Japanese government, sure...

Regardless there is evidence that it is quite possible that she was indeed captured by the Japs, but it's not 100% proven. Saw some special on the History Channel, at an Imperial Japanese camp on an island an Ainu girl claimed to have seen a white woman matching Amelia's description and a man (her copilot) executed by Japanese troops.
