There was the classroom presentation that justified suicide bombings. Comments to colleagues about a climate of persecution faced by Muslims in the military. Conversations with a mosque leader that became incoherent.
[snip]
Finnell said he did just that during a year of study in which Hasan made a presentation "that justified suicide bombing" and spewed "anti-American propaganda" as he argued the war on terror was "a war against Islam." Finnell said he and at least one other student complained about Hasan, surprised that someone with "this type of vile ideology" would be allowed to wear an officer's uniform.
But Finnell said no one filed a formal, written complaint about Hasan's comments out of fear of appearing discriminatory.
"In retrospect, I'm not surprised he did it," Finnell said. "I had real questions about what his priorities were, what his beliefs were."
[snip]
Both military and civilian investigators have yet to talk with Hasan, who reportedly jumped up on a desk and shouted "Allahu akbar!" - Arabic for "God is great!" - at the start of Thursday's attack.
Not posting this as being anything close to conclusive but it does say something about where his head may have been at.

Sources say intelligence agencies intercepted electronic communications between the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, and anti-American Islamists starting last year and reported the contacts to federal authorities, including the FBI
[snip]
The New York Times said intelligence agencies intercepted communications last year and this year between Hasan and a cleric in Yemen known for his incendiary anti-American teachings.
It is unclear what federal law enforcement authorities did with the intelligence information. One intelligence official said: "There's no sign at this point that the CIA had collected information relevant to this case and then simply sat on it."
The Justice Department, the FBI and the Army had no immediate comment about having received any intelligence information about Hasan before the shooting.

Even more interesting is that Awlaki is not offering his perverse praise to a complete stranger. According to a New York Times article also posted on Monday, U.S. intelligence agencies were aware that Major Hassan had been in contact with Awlaki, an American born Muslim of Yemeni parents who has served as imam in at least two mosques in the United States and is a renowned radical jihadist.

Now let's go back to 1942. In Morrocco Dad's Second Armored Division troops all carried loaded .45's when they went out and about. Before that & nearly nightly our men, a few at a time, were being abducted & then castrated in a dark alley in the bigger cities and towns. A girl may have gotten too close to one soldier. Or some pregnant girl would take the heat off her real boyfriend and point out a lone serviceman to blame him for her plight in the night. All were innocent men picked out in the night.
I heard that infidel shocker when I was in 50's grade school and truckin' long distance cattle and melons with my Dad. I often thought I should tell that on late night radio. Maybe I will!

No, I think it just falls back on an individual.
An individual that did not want to go overseas and was incredibly troubled by the idea of it. Who knows what was going on beforehand. Who knows what kind of issues he had? he was reportedly horrified by the words of the soldiers he had been helping(or trying to help), and wanted no part of going over. How much of that is religion or mental illness is yet to be seen. That is why I am waiting to find out what comes out of the investigation before I hop on the bandwagon of conspiracies; that thing has wobbly wheels.
You REALLY need to look up the definition of psychiatry. You are way off on that one. Actually Aquatus has done it for you. Having actually been in combat, and having a son who just got back from Iraq 2 months ago after a year in Baghdad, I can assure you, the people helping soldiers deal with the horrors they dealt with are very much necessary, and helpful. YOU seem to not have any experience of it, and dismiss it with a wave of hand, but for those of us who had need of it, it was helpful for a very difficult time in our lives.
Axtually it happened to me to come across the published opinion of a psychologist, who thought that to a certain degree becoming a psychiatrist or a psychologist by itself indicates some deviation from "norm", as these people experience interest to the ways, how sick people think and reason. A sort of a resonance, or a subconscious pro-active behaviour, a fear of the psychiatrists forces a person to become a psychiatrist... Meanwhile liaising 8 hours a day with mental patients also make a certain imprint on personal psychology of a doctor.
