A father died after being nipped by his dog during a game of fetch.

Steven Sewell, 55, was on holiday in the Scottish Highlands with his wife Angela and teenage son David when the family’s partially blind dog Judy bit him.

The retired teacher patched up the small wound with tissue and carried on as normal because he was not in any pain.

However, an inquest has heard how he began complaining of shivers and sickness a few days later.

He was taken to hospital, where doctors diagnosed blood poisoning, and he died a few days later after the infection spread to his brain.

The family say the dog has never behaved aggressively, and are keeping her in spite of the freak accident.

Mrs Sewell, 53, said of the incident: ‘It was not vicious. It was just bad eyesight and tragic, but you have to accept it and move on.’

I'm not saying any harm should come to the animal, but I could see it being difficult to hold onto the dog after that sort of ordeal. So good for them.

As tragic as this is I think the lady made the right choice, A few years ago my mum got scratched on the leg by one of our dogs when he was a puppy. It didn't kill her but it put her in a bad way for over 10 years afterwards (the wounds on her legs never healed). She never had any ill feelings towards the dog.
Sdly these things happen. :(

We weren't allowed to keep a malamute and her puppies after her mate almost killed my brother. Funny thing was the puppies didn't even belong to the dog that attacked him, but for whatever reason we had to give them all up.

I'm glad this woman could look past something like that, it shows a real respect and understanding. I like that.

Wait a minute here, it went down like this: The dog nipped the guy, the guy didn't have the sense to keep the bite clean, or to seek medical help when infection set in. So, this means the dog should be blamed for his death? Amazing, literally amazing.

After reading the title, I thought the dog slaughtered this man...
But since he got infection it wasn’t the dog that killed him, it was combination of bad luck and bacteria.
It’s like saying ‘woman is keeping the stairs in the house in spite they killed her clumsy husband who fell down them’.
If dogs could talk, she’d say she misses her human and if it was up to her, she wouldn’t give him infection on purpose.

How sad for the family. I'm glad they are able to see past their grief and not blame the dog.

It sounds like that dog is a festering pool of bacteria. Best get rid of that infectious animal.

It would never occur to me to say that the dog killed the guy. I would say that blood poisoning killed the guy. If I wanted to pin it on another living creature I would say bacteria killed the guy. If the dog had intended to kill the guy it wouldn't have "nipped" him.

I'm glad the woman didn't have the dog put down as an expression of her rage against fate. Many people would.

That's exactly what I was thinking. My dogs have nipped me plenty of times during play, and I alwas get my mum to check it out, and keep an eye out for infection. It's not the dogs fault this guy was an idiot

If I got bit by an animal that can reach its own *** with its tongue, you'd better believe I'm going to the doctor to get the wound professionally cleaned. When my cat got sick, he scratched my sister up pretty bad when we tried to give him his medicine. She went to the doctor and it turned out she was fine, but unfortunately the kitty had to be put down a few days later so it was all in vain anyway.
